Ferentz on True Freshmen Playing in 2011

Q: Is running back a spot where a true freshman could play this year?

Ferentz: No question. Right now, first and foremost we have Marcus here and Jason White. I am eager to see DeAndre Johnson. He missed his senior year of high school and was in terrible shape when we got here and his knee was 85%. So it will be fun to watch him and see where he is at. Then in the secondary and who knows with the linebackers and defensive line. We have an open mind everywhere. Offensive line I doubt it. Outside of that we will have an open mind. Quarterback, I doubt it. Jake would like to redshirt and we want to do that.

Yeah, I knew Jake would redshirt. He's a smart kid and is also preparing for his life a doctor so he has a lot on his plate. His parents are very supportive and are happy he's at Iowa. Next spring will be interesting for sure.

I don't find it likely that he would beat out the field next spring. Vandy would have to just bomb, and I don't think his "floor" is THAT low.

Unless Vandenberg, Weinke, Derby and Suess all got hurt I just can't see Jake not redshirting. He needs the year to not only learn the system but to also get his body ready for Big 10 football. He is 6'3" but only about 185-190. He really needs this year to bulk up. I am definitely looking forward to seeing him in the future. Looks like we got a great player.

Vandy came in skinny too and has filled out nicely. I'm excited about his future also.

I think Vandy will be the best QB we have had at Iowa in a while. I really like his size and the way he throws the ball

Jake Rudock, 3 year starter at QB, 2013-2015?

This is how I pretty much seen it since his recruitment. Vandy will get the next two years with the keys to the car then I think Rudock takes over after him and gets the team for three years like Tate and Stanzi. I think Rudock is too perfect of a QB for our system to be passed up by Derby. If Derby wins out in 2013 then Rudock will possibly only be a one year QB. I think with Derby a lot of it is about stroking his ego. They are going to let him try at QB, but he has value at other positions too, something Rudock doesn't have. So they can stick with Derby as QB and let Rudock go to waste or go with Rudock and use Derby elsewhere. Seems like a simple solution to me.
