Ferentz on the Side from 11/1/11

Q: Is Mika’il McCall ready to go?

Kirk Ferentz: Yeah. I think we are...but again, he has missed a lot of practice time. Its like Brad Rogers working back in there. Last week was the first week he was fully engaged, so good luck finding a good spot to put him in a game like that. Now he is a couple weeks into it, so we will feel better.

Q: There is a bizarre rumor that won’t go away about you reaching out to Mike Stoops.

Ferentz: You mean Dan McCarney is not available? What year was that one?

Q: Yeah, it won’t go away, maybe you can address it so it will.

Ferentz: We have a former receiver and I was thinking about him coming back to be a staff member. I am not responding to that stuff.

Q: Were you aware of it?

Ferentz: Someone said that last week and i said the same thing about McCarney. That was the rumor a while back, too.

Q: Did Keenan practice last week? He was warming up in pregame.

Ferentz: Similar to what Canzeri went through before Indiana. He is in the final phases of being able to get out there. Today will eb the first day with us and not the trainers. He will be with both. I don’t know if he will be good enough to play Big Ten football Saturday

Q: And Nardo?

Ferentz: He is further ahead. Keenan is the only one lagging behind now. Nardo and Hitchens didn’t play the other day but hopefully they are closer. We held James out against Northwestern. The next week we were able to get him out there. The longer you can keep him from being under duress, the better chance you have. I think those guys are ready to go.

Q: Are your opponents wise to your no-huddle look?

Ferentz: We haven’t been no huddle in a few weeks now.

Q: Is that why?

Ferentz: Nah, it just hasn’t fit with what we are doing right now.

Q: Do you feel like the talent is there defensively and its just been breakdowns week to week?

Ferentz: It’s like the offensive line last year; if we were healthy and could keep the same group together, we could improv weekly. Sometimes its two steps forward and one back. I still think that will happen. I am optimistic, I think we will get better.

Q: Is it a part of having two true sophomores at linebacker?

Ferentz: If you do the math...I am not here to make excuses, but the reality when Hodge and Greenway, the best LB duo at a tandem, their second year on campus they were special teams and learning, third year played well and did so in the fourth and fifth year...but we are on a different track here. These guys are on the AJ Edds track. If they are both healthy, we can move along. They are not there yet. Losing your most veteran guy does not help you (when Nielsen was injured) but that is football.

Q: What kind of season is Shaun Prater having

Ferentz: I think OK. He is playing well. We are not playing well enough on defense to be where we want to be. The reality is we gave up 22 points but it wasn’t good enough to win. We did a lot of good things but not enough to win, the same thing on offense. We didn’t do enough to win, got to the redzone and could not score.

Q: What will happen with the DL one year from now? What is the future like there?

Ferentz: I am looking at this week. Come back a year from now and I will give you an answer.

"Ferentz: Nah, it just hasn’t fit with what we are doing right now."

And what exactly is it you are doing now?

Does he always come off as condescending and "you need to know what i tell you" every press conference?

How are you people missing the biggest point of all?? He all but verified that DJK is joining the staff!!

Ferentz: We have a former receiver and I was thinking about him coming back to be a staff member.

That's why you have to stomp the weaker teams to give other guys playing time.

Jon's last question, about the D Line one year from now. We know his staff is actively pursuing two Juco kids, one of which at least is a D Lineman. The other could become one. This is very unusual for the KF program. He is obviously worried about the next year, big time. I must have missed a thread about this, as it is so indicative, but I'm on my cell app and can't do a thread search. Wish he would answer the question more thoroughly. What would be the harm in that?

Hey when you're rolling like we are on offense you don't want to mess it up. Kirk also wouldn't want to make more work for other coaches by giving them different looks to prepare for.

What exactly is he supposed to say?

Does he always come off as condescending and "you need to know what i tell you" every press conference?

"Yeah, we are going to be replacing coaches and here is who we are bringing in"?

I'm all good with letting KF and staff have it for what goes on during games, but his demeanor to the press has always been good. I guess I don't know what he is supposed to be doing in these press conferences, throwing his assistants/players under the bus? Saying that we are abandoning everything we believe as a staff/team and starting over? That would be cathartic to much of the fan base, but wouldn't really change the reality of this season to date. KF's job is to get this team believing it can beat Michigan this weekend, that's what he's judged on.

There's really no mystery as to why Iowa is struggling. Iowa has been/is built on the premise that we can be better than our opponents on the defensive and offensive lines. Given the lack of B1G-caliber skill position talent produced annually in Iowa high school football, it's a wise strategy. This year's team has a good (not great) offensive line and a d-line that is mediocre (optimistic) to downright bad (realistic). If anything, we have as much speed/athleticism among the secondary, receivers and running backs as any time in KF's tenure. Not saying that we couldn't use more, but the talent in the secondary, WR, and RB groups is more than enough to win with. Go back and watch the Minnesota game, the Indiana game, the ISU game, pretty much any game this year outside of Northwestern. Rarely is the QB put in any sort of duress. We can yell about schemes, no-huddle vs huddle, game has passed coaches by, lack of fire, etc. all day but none of it matters. If Iowa keeps getting controlled on the line of scrimmage by the opposing offense, they won't win squat.

I guess I'm not sure how Norm Parker went from being regarded as a genius from 2007-2010 to the game now "passing him by." I've seen Iowa blitz more and play more man defense this year than in the past 4 combined. It doesn't matter when you don't have the horses.

WTF? What exactly are you doing because it losing to a TERRIBLE MN team and nearly losing to a mediocre Pitt team should give you a little guidance into what works and what doesn't.

that probably wasn't JD's qurstion. the "on the side" sessions isn't one on one, its basically just am extension of the regular presser. I don't think JD even goes to them anymore, he just posts the transcript.

I dont get Kirk's swipe at DJK here.

why so bitter Kirk? does he really think Koulianos was the only player using drugs last year?

a cheap shot and I think less of Ferentz for it. You won, Kirk. Kid didnt get a shot at the NFL. Congrats. Nice job last week vs Minnesota.

He didn't take a swipe at DJK.

Iowa moved the ball at will the last three weeks, the offense hasn't been the problem. So why is a no-huddle look necessary? Coker just ripped Minny for 250, obviously they did something right.

What happens if they do no-huddle, go three and out, and the defense is back on the field? At this point, the offense HAS to stay on as long as possible to keep the defense from making mistakes.

seemed like a shot at DJK to me. kirk acts like he lives in a cave, but jon has mentioned several times how kirk takes note of what's said about him and the team.

that said, he should have kept it to himself, though he had a right to say it.
