In a world where coaches fire assistant coaches on a whim to save face and who operate with a win-or-bust attitude, Ferentz's approach rarely ceases to impress me.
Not only does he dutifully ignore the "fire assistant coach X" talk and focus more on having EVERYBODY on the coaching staff evaluate themselves and eachother ... he also doesn't shy from having the players place great emphasis (and dare I say, priority) on their academics.
Sure enough, Iowa not only has a track record of having plenty of Academic All-Big10 players who have been engineers ... however, we apparently are having a bunch of math/comp-sci majors too. Considering the societal stigma that our nation seems to have when it comes to nearly ANYTHING math-related ... I find this tremendously refreshing.
Anyhow, I hope that parents of future recruits take note. The Iowa coaches clearly WILL NOT steer their players away from their academic dreams and/or ambitions. I think that is terrific.
Hopefully, recruits and their parents are paying attention too!
