Ferentz and Academics of Iowa Football players = recruiting tool?

In a world where coaches fire assistant coaches on a whim to save face and who operate with a win-or-bust attitude, Ferentz's approach rarely ceases to impress me.

Not only does he dutifully ignore the "fire assistant coach X" talk and focus more on having EVERYBODY on the coaching staff evaluate themselves and eachother ... he also doesn't shy from having the players place great emphasis (and dare I say, priority) on their academics.

Sure enough, Iowa not only has a track record of having plenty of Academic All-Big10 players who have been engineers ... however, we apparently are having a bunch of math/comp-sci majors too. Considering the societal stigma that our nation seems to have when it comes to nearly ANYTHING math-related ... I find this tremendously refreshing.

Anyhow, I hope that parents of future recruits take note. The Iowa coaches clearly WILL NOT steer their players away from their academic dreams and/or ambitions. I think that is terrific.

Hopefully, recruits and their parents are paying attention too!

Bump.

Given that a bunch of recruits like Ekakatie and Lambert have been talking about how important academics are to them ... I thought that it was worthwhile to dig up this post. It illustrates what they can expect from Iowa concerning academics.

Iowa may not quite have the academic reputation of Michigan or Northwestern ... however, for a football player, we offer academic opportunities that are as good as ANY school in the nation!

Folks have to remember that many schools actually PREVENT players from pursuing their academic dreams. And, what is cool at Iowa is that that is absolutely NOT the case.

At Iowa, the coaching staff RESPECTS their players and treats them like thoughtful young men. They're not just viewed as JUST "football players" ... they're viewed as students ... and thoughtful ones at that! No stereotypes ... no baloney ... just straight shootin'.

I hope that Lambert notices that Spears is also an engineering major!

Iowa offers not only a great opportunity for him to pursue his academic aspirations (and be encouraged by the coaches, no less) ... but also to benefit from superior coaching!
