Fact of the Purdue Game - What the Data Says

Purdue's insane 1.303 points per possession for the game (bad defense) and Iowa's -7 turnover margin (mix of not forcing turnovers and coughing it up on offense) and the Hawks basically spotted Purdue 9 points in losing the turnover battle. (7 x 1.303 = 9.1)

Just to give the points per possession some backbone here, the nation's #1 points per possession ranking so far on the year is Gonzaga at 1.217. The nation's #353 ranked defensive points per possession allowed is Mississippi Valley State at 1.118. Iowa allowing 1.303 points per possession last night on average would be the worst defensive efficiency in the nation by a landslide and the best offensive efficiency in the nation by a landslide for Purdue.

Iowa's offense actually played decently averaging 1.061 points per possession last night. Well under their average on the year of 1.125 (#20 in the nation) but would still be good enough to be ranked in the 70s. In other words around #70 in offensive efficiency to go along with #353 in defensive efficiency won't win you many games on the road.

In summary, the data backs up everyone's opinion that Iowa's defense completely sucked last night. So, I guess you could basically say their defense sucking was not just everyone's opinion but indeed a "fact".

You can't really take much about the O in that game.

Fran is throwing every defensive idea at the wall to see what sticks, instead of picking 1 defense and drilling it into their heads, repeatedly. Man to man, man to man with the hedge, man to man with a switch, 2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone. Good grief. Is there any defense we haven't seen from Fran over the past season and a half? That is no way to address this problem.

So the analytics match what the eyes saw... There's not enough deodorant in the world to put on to cover up what happened last night...

The most baffling aspect of our defense is having Tyler Cook flash out to the top of the key. With a well-coached team, they exploit that to the max. #1 reason why Purdue dominated in the paint.

My boss is a Purdue grad and he even said they aren't that good this year. He was surprised it was such an easy win.
