Extensive PTL Highlights & Evaluation: Tyler Cook

Quick correction Rob, the first sentence says Tyler Smith. While he reminds me a little of Tyler Smith, I think you meant Tyler Cook.

Yup. Thanks. Somebody hit me up on Twitter, too, with the correction. Shout be fixed.

Just watched the video. Man is he quick, powerful, and explosive. Anyone remember how Tyler Smith looked as a freshman compared to him?

If Cook remains healthy and can stay out of foul trouble, he will be a star as a freshman. The guy is an athletic 260 lb basketball player. You just can't teach that. I'm sure the NBA is aware of who this guy is.

Since we are on the topic, do you think Tyler Cook is more talented than Tyler Smith was as a freshman?

I believe come only the end of December, it will become evident the two Tylers are not in the same league.

This Tyler has an all-around game that fantastic now, but will grow considerably with Fran & Co's tutelage. Cook's offense is already dynamic with his ambidexterous moves, quickness to the ball, And his improving jump shot. If TC can solidify his defense with some additional coaching and experience, which he soon should, he will be in the Top 5 All-time freshman in Iowa history.
That's a TALL order, but he has the talent, skills and it sounds like the work ethic to do just that.

For reference Tyler Smith averaged roughly 15pts, 5Rebs, and 3.6assists as a freshman. That was on probably a less talented team but they were not awful (4th in the Big10).

If Tyler Cook is somewhere in that 12pts/6Rebs range I think we will be in good shape.

If Cook gets the minutes, I think he will beat te 12 pts and 6 rebs. There will probably be a lot more competition for playing time than Smith ever had. I can think of at least three guys that are pretty talented that Cook will be in competition with. It sounds like Iowa has the potential to have a pretty good team. I suppose Cook will probably start out at center.

Smith definitely had some Wow moments. Unfortunately he probably had as many of those off the court, as well as on. Hopefully he has turned his life around for the better.

Everything we have read about Cook is the opposite of Smith, off the court. Of course that could change, but I do not see that happening under Fran. He isn't Pearl, and he definitely ain't Alford... On the court TC is everything Smith was, and with more size. Time will tell...

TC looks like he has more offensive game than TS and I would say his prospects are good to surpass TS in accolades here.

On another board they were guessing that Cook will draw the most fouls from the opposing team. It will be interesting to see if Wagner can draw more. They both have the frame and athletic ability to make it tough on the other team. Hopefully, Cook will improve his free throw shooting before the season begins.
