Expectations for McCaffery:

Most level-headed fans I think would agree that the first year will probably be a wash with young players learning a completely different system than they had under Lick. But when should we realistically expect to see:

1. a winning record
2. an NCAA appearance

Honestly, I don't see any reason he can't come in and succeed right away. Unless he is implementing a Lickliter style of offensive scheme. If he is an up-tempo guy, that is how most young people naturally play the game. I think it will be much easier to play under McCaffery's style. I'm going to be optimistic and say NIT next year (or NCAA if they expand to 96 teams).

It depends. The coach is somewhat limited scholarship wise, unless he runs off some guys. If our guys just aren't that good, and he can't really get new guys it is unfair to expect the world of him. Bright-line expectations aren't that useful, just kind of see how it goes. I don't need an NCAA birth right away. I would like to see this team have a winning record, it shouldn't be that hard in a Power Conference, and play competitive in the Big 10. I would also like to see Fran keep some of the good in-state talent in the upcoming classes. Between Randle, Paige, Staten, Jok, ect... there is a lot of Top 150 guards and wings coming up in-state. His system seems guard friendly.

If all current players stay and all recruits remain committed I think it's realistic to think they can be above .500 in year two and in the tourney by year 3. It depends on the abilty to establish some recruiting in roads as to how quickly they start winning.

We are going to have the same players. Everyone's biggest gripe with Lick was lack of talent. McCaffery is going to have to coach these players, and is going to be limited in what he can do as far is brining in new players. If we lack talent, as many believe, it will be tough for Fran to win instantly.

I'll say winning record in year 2, NCAA in year 4-5 (hard to quantify that one for sure). But to go 16-15 in 2nd year isn't a miracle. I've seen too many programs taken over by a good coach that show nearly instant improvement. If McCaffery is the man, then his impact on the program will be positive, and I still think we'll see it sooner rather than later if he is the right guy.

One of the issues I had with Lickliter was how difficult it seemed to be to pick up his system--based both on his own comments and the product on the floor.

Most "systems" are not that difficult to pick up. Look no farther than Tom Davis's first year at Iowa. A good coach can tweak his system to fit the personnel and the level of experience.

If we can't get to the tourney in his second year, when Gatens and Fuller are seniors, I think that will be a very bad sign. Unless he's absolutely bringing in some gangbuster recruiting classes. On that note, it would be nice if he signed a 4* in his first couple years. This isn't football. Those stars often matter.

CHShawk dude you need to get a dose of reality bud. Big 10 was tough this year with most teams being young it won't get any easier and we don't even know if Lick's recruits will come at this point. NCAA bid next year get a clue.

I see no reason that he couldn't win .500 next season. He has a vetern squad. Cole as the lone Sr. that are going to want to prove that they are tired of being pushed over in the leauge and make a statement. Especially if he runs a uptempo style and pressure D. He does however need a good ball handling pg that can run his style asap. No offense to Payne, he is not quick enough to be reliable for McCaffery's so-called uptempo style of play.

Year 2 he needs to make the big dance. NIT next year is not to shabby. It would be a tournament that seems for ever since they have been there but would be a step in the right direction.

He needs to bring in good recruiting assistants that can get ATHLETIC BALL PLAYERS that can handle his style and the Big-Ten.

I think we could see a team around .500 this year. Lick' already instilled a defensive toughness and a mindset in these guys and they seemed to compete up until the final 3 games of the year. If we can get an additional Pg to go with Cully and another athletic wing or PF, I think the N.I.T. could be in store for Iowa in year two (bubble team just missing NCAA's).
However, we, the fans need to get our butts back in the seats and show this team and coach that we believe in them!

Have you blocked out this season already? We were non-competitive in a lot of games this season, not just the last 3. Off the top of my head TX, Wichita State, MN, @IL, MSU, @UNI, @UM, and @NW were all non-competitive losses, and some were non-competitive by half-time.

Also, if you adjust our defensive statistics for possession per game, and efficiency we played some terrible defense this year. This team was epicly bad, and we need to not get carried away with expectations next year.

I don't know what to expect right now. It all depends on who stays in the next recruiting class, who stays who is on the current team, if anyone else gets brought in, etc. There are too many variables to consider.

I, myself, am ready to begin the next chapter in Iowa basketball. Hopefully it's a good one.
