Excuses for the poor season and perspective

A little perspective on how things can happen, and why I think way too many people are overreacting little cry babies who get way to much of their self confidence from Iowa Hawkeye Football...

With that said, in my opinion it's our offense that is not acceptable. It needs some changes schematically. The last 10 years of data show mediocrity with this offense. I'm not big on the people who use one or two years of data, but 10 years is enough data. We are about 7 points of increase in our scoring average from 9 win seasons being disappointments instead of 7 wins seasons being disappointments.

But here's the deal folks. Let's look at some other things that have happened this season. Parity is among us.... even for the big dogs with tons of talent in their back yards. If these schools who are loaded with southern speed and talent can have disappointing seasons than we certainly are not going to be immune to them either.

Look at this pre-season poll: 2010 NCAA College Football Polls and Rankings for Week 1 - ESPN

Florida at #4... now has a record right now of: 7-5, 4-4. Just like us...

Texas at #5... isn't going to a bowl... that's worse than our '07 season. They are 5-7 and 2-6.

The bottom line is we are 7-5 and 4-4. We have a chance to beat a good opponent in a decent bowl game and finish 8-5.

Now it's a big if, but if 8-5 is what we have to consider a "disappointing season" then sign me up.

Look how many injuries we've had this year... sure every team has injuries, but we've had more than most teams. We've had an abnormal amount of set backs on the injury front. There's no argument about it.

On top of that we lost our d-coordinator before Big 10 play even started.... the same d-coordinator that has produced 9 top 30% in the nation ranked scoring defenses (points allowed) in the last 10 years. 5 top 10% ranked scoring defenses in the last 10 years. Look at these numbers:http://www.hawkeyenation.com/forum/...ional-ranking-numbers-over-last-10-years.html

And for anyone who wants to criticize this defense or Norm Parker... Do us all favor and look at that link above and then proceed to muzzle yourself at least through the New Year... through Valentine's Day would be better. The numbers this defense has put up over the last decade are absolutely astonishing considering the mediocre output on offense.

Back to this season.... look at the scores of the games we've lost. We've lost so many close games. Sometimes it's the way the ball bounces the other way. It just happens. Football has a luck element to it. For every team that wins the national championship each year there's about 2-3 other teams that were probably just as deserving, but luck wasn't on their side.

If Michigan can fall into a 3 year slump than we could easily fall into a 6 year slump. EASILY... if we hit a stretch of poor luck or make a bad coaching hire.

Since Kirk took us to our first bowl game in 2001 we've had one year, ONE effing YEAR, that could be considered unacceptable and that was the '07 year.

No one is perfect. Some of the clock management issues, defensive play calls in the 4th quarter, and offensive strategy have been very frustrating, but we don't live and breath college football. We might not understand the bigger picture.

The bigger picture is what we've done over the last 10 years.

If I could sign on the dotted line for an exact replica of what Iowa football has done the last decade I'd sign in a heart beat. Kirk Ferentz is arrogant in a confident, don't question me sort of way, and that's a sign of confidence. I'd be confident too if I had a decade worth of his college football curriculum vitae... and the $3.7M/year wouldn't hurt either. It's that arrogant, don't question me attitude, that makes me think we're in for another decade of competitive and productive football that will include BCS bowl wins and Big 10 championships.

Great post. I agree. The hawks will be good the next two years. Some people have this inexplicable entitlement about them that I cannot understand. Hey, don't get me wrong. I saw, in person, all five defeats. It was brutal. However, I've seen some amazing games in the last few years, and I'll be back next year to scream my guts out. The hawks will be back, and soon.

Tucson, Evanston, and Minneapolis were brutal places to watch games this year. It will make future victories that much sweeter.

We have some good players returning. Hopefully, the injury bug will not bite so hard. Go hawks.
