A point guard is what has been lacking at Iowa. They have had a SF and a guy who should be coming off the bench playing the point.
I just don't get this statement. We have a junior guard returning who led the big ten in assist-to-turnover ratio and was 12th nationally (despite numerous missed bunnies and some cold long range shooting at times from teammates). Mike is a gym rat who has done nothing but give 100% without so much as a complaint when asked to shift over to the off-guard spot.
Mike is the best on ball defender on the team and I don't think that is even debatable. Dickerson hasn't played in the Big Ten yet and will probably struggle at times against the more physical guards his 1st year, just like Mike did. I'd temper exepectations for TD. He will be a good player but I wouldn't expect him to be the best PG on the team right from the get go. He'll most likely show flashes and have his ups and downs. The defenders are much quicker at this level. We'll see just how quickly TD can adjust and improve his game.

MG's assist to turnover ratio is about the most deceiving stat there is. He had 3.9 assists per game. His good AT ratio comes from his being cautious, which is one reason the offense stalled so significantly in the half-court. He always looked for the pass with the least likelihood of being defended instead of the one with the best chance of scoring. (Think Stanzi's final year and all those 2 yard dump offs.)
Why do you think Fran put all his eggs in the Ulis basket and then worked so hard to get Dickerson? If he just needed PG depth or a replacement for MG when he graduates, these guys are not who you put all your stock in.
MG is a classic third guard. He can come off the bench and do what he does best, which is push the ball and get his own points. Ask the Spurs how valuable that guy can be.
MG > TD ... DeanVogs is right on, both Woody and Gesell will end up being very good.
Ummmm you do realize that Fran had already missed on Ulis BEFORE last season even began, right? So to say it had to do with MG's "cautious" play last year is just factually incorrect.
I just get this funny feeling that all the b!tching and moaning about Mike and Woody will be like all those who b!tched about Gatens during his So and Jr years. Most players take some time to reach their full potential.
During the whole Ulis thing I kept saying that Fran clearly didn't think MG was the answer at point, because there is no way you bring that guy in as a backup and they put all their energy into that one player. I couldn't figure out why exactly and then I watched this past year.
There were also other options for Dickerson and he picked Iowa, which makes me think he felt fairly confident he was going to get a lot of minutes.
Again, people think I am dissing on MG. I am not. I just see him in a different role. Think Vinny Johnson or Patty Mills.
I don't necessarily think you are dogging on MikeG. I was just saying that Fran didn't go after Ulis because of MikeG play this last year, as he had already missed on him by the time the season even started. I think it is fairly evident that Fran is trying to bring in playmakers, something the team sorely lacks.
Anyone else start to think MG was throwing games at the end of the year? I would prefer that scenario to one where he really is that bad of a shooter.
