ESPN picks Iowa #25 in early pre-seaon poll

HAHAHAHA......ActiveVadger, everyone sees it like we do....

25. Iowa Hawkeyes: The Hawkeyes missed the NCAA tournament, but they should feel good about going 9-9 in the rugged Big Ten and finishing second in the NIT. Both were major accomplishments for a rapidly improving program. Don't be surprised if 2013-14 is the season when Iowa really turns the corner. Every key player will return from a team that went 25-13 overall. Included in that mix are leading scorers Roy Devyn Marble(15 points) and Aaron White (12.8), who also averaged a team-high 6.2 rebounds. With teams such as Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and likely Michigan losing a lot, the well-coached Hawkeyes have a chance to finish as high as third in the Big Ten while earning an NCAA tournament bid for the first time since 2006.

How did you put it? Oh yeah:
I also don't respect lazy analysis.
is what you said.

So please take to ESPN, and explain to them the history of Bo Ryan and Wisconsin BB, and how they can't possibly finish outside of the top 4 in the BIG.

Jason King, Eamonn Brennan, Myron Medcalf look forward to your analysis on Wisconsin BB....

Wait, this has Wisconsin 6th in the Big Ten? Great! Looks like my emails to ESPN and everyone else to begin a Lazy Wisconsin smear campaign have gotten thru.

This is the same Espn that bad mouthed us out of this years tournament. I don't trust their kiss butt network.

What are you talking about, ESPN had nothing to do with Iowa being left out.

Iowa was left out because the committee once again relied far too heavily on the very broken (see what the Mountain West Conference did to game the system) RPI. But, everyone knew this was going to happen, and part of that falls on Fran. I am exceedingly happy with the job he has done, but this past season's scheduling is one of his few failings while being at Iowa.

Iowa was left out because we werent good enouh to beat teams when given the chance.

It isn't either/or.

Iowa's schedule left the team's margin of error too slight. It was an unnecessary handicap and almost completely self-inflicted.

That being said, you are also correct. Iowa could have finished better in a number of their games and made it in anyway- despite the schedule.

It's Fran's team. He is going to schedule in a way that is most beneficial to the team. He has repeatedly said if he had it to do over again he would do the same thing. It's time to let it go. I suspect Fran will again do what he thinks is best for the team with next year's schedule. I also suspect it will look different than this year.

Marble's injury/issues are the reason we missed the tournament IMO. There's nothing Fran or anyone else could do about it...injuries happen.

He did a very poor job of it last season. He has said he'd do it again, but that is the arrogance of a coach speaking. All coaches are arrogant, it only gets annoying when they start losing. Take KF, when Iowa was winning, we loved how Iowa beat teams through execution and thought Kirk was pretty funny when talking about Iowa not being sexy. We don't like that phrase anymore.

We are- for the most part- accepting of Fran's stupid scheduling last season, because he has taken Iowa on a very sharp incline. It doesn't change the fact that he was very wrong with this year's schedule.

He misjudged just how good this year's team would be. The scheduling wasn't stupid, because we weren't really supposed to be fighting for an NCAA bid this year. It was a young team that was going to experience a lot of growing pains. Or at least that was the prevailing theory before the season. The team exceeded expectations and the schedule came back to bite them because of it. I'm sure he'd do it again with a similar team. It won't be so weak next year.

TM - You may not have nailed it, but you're on the right track. Yes .. Fran scheduled cupcakes, but he felt the team needed the wins, not to get blown up. And none of us are in a position to know what the team needed better than Fran.

I'm glad he scheduled the way he did. There's a very real possibility that had he scheduled tougher, this team would not have succeeded the way they did. (Yes .. the reverse is also true.) Nobody expected the NCAAs this year until Iowa started winning. A year ago, I, for one, would have signed up for a runner up finish in the NIT. It's called taking steps forward. Next year? I expect the Big Dance.

GO HAWKS!!!

Nobody is asking him to schedule tougher, just smarter. Instead of playing 300+ RPI teams, play a team in the 175-225 range, these are still bad teams, likely wins, but not RPI killers. They do not represent a noticeable step up in difficulty in reality, but look much better to the computers. Or, instead of scheduling these 300+ teams, schedule a non D1 school or, they do not get computed in the RPI, so the schedule is actually easier, even though the RPI will rank you higher.

This isn't all 'after the fact' reasoning either. Many people complained about the schedule prior to the season.

We swear, so check at your own risk. But Fran didn't schedule properly, and all who are saying otherwise, are simply wrong. Iowa playing Coppin State next year - Hawkeye Lounge

It took a huge 20 point comeback to beat Gardner-Webb at home, we barely beat Central Michigan here. People love to overlook this point and act like playing teams 100 spots better in the RPI would be automatic wins. We play a tougher schedule, even marginally tougher, there's a good chance we drop a game or two more.
