Iowa’s success in Texas unmatched in the last decade
While the Hawkeyes have reason to have success on the trail in the Lone Star State with assistant Bobby Kennedy having recruited the Dallas area for years, and offensive coordinator Greg Davis having many connections in the state, Iowa has zipped right past reasonable expectations. After inking zero players from Texas in February, there are five verbals from the state already heading into August with four having come in June and July after ESPN 300Eno Benjamingot the commitment party started in April. It’s not just the number of commitments for Iowa, but the quality as well. Should ESPN 300sChevin Callowayand Eno Benjamin ink with Iowa in February, they will become the first four-star prospects from Texas to head to Iowa City in the 12 years ESPN has ranked prospects.
USC and UCLA have combined for just one ESPN 300 commitment this summer
While prospects on the West Coast tend to make decisions later in the process, both programs recruit nationally, making this a pretty staggering development. There have been 59 ESPN 300 commitments this summer, some expected and some surprises, but just one to the Trojans or Bruins is a hard to fathom. With three of California’s top five prospects committed to out-of-state schools entering August, there is ample pressure to respond in-state in the coming months as well. The Trojans and Bruins are either set up for a blazing hot finish, which both programs have a recent history of doing, or a near flop for the 2017 class.
