Former Iowa Hawkeyes players defend strength coach - ESPN

Former Iowa football players are voicing support for Hawkeyes strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle as the university investigates how 13 current players came to be hospitalized with a muscle disorder following a series of grueling workouts.
Indianapolis Colts linebacker Pat Angerer, in a statement posted on the National Football Post website, said he was "tired of all the negative attention" being focused on the team's strength and conditioning program. He said workouts under Doyle at Iowa "did not push us too far, it just pushed us places where most people couldn't have gone on their own."

Among the Iowa players hospitalized was first-team All Big Ten defensive back Shaun Prater, according to a person close to the player. Prater's blood test results are close to normal, but he has been told he will miss a month of workouts, according to the source.

That Prater would be one of the affected players really adds some perspective to the situation. This is a guy that decided to forgo the NFL and come back to Iowa for one more season to become more NFL ready. This is a veteran player who went through the disappointing 4th quarter losses. This is a player who has undergone these workouts before. What was the difference this year? He's a leader this year. This is his last chance and wants to invest himself fully into the team and his personal career. Could it be as simple as we have a lot of extremely driven individuals who will push themselves further than any other individual could push them? If Iowa's biggest problem is that their players just work too damn hard...I guess there are worse things we could be facing. Having said that, there is a responsibility to the football program to provide proper health and safety information to our players so they are aware of the symptoms and dangers of pushing themselves to that level. There is definitely much to be learned and taken away from this and I hope that changes are made to improve the safety of our players.

yeah and now he has to sit out a month, which will set him back. good thing we pushed our players so hard.

everyone knows this was a workout meant to have kids puking, meant to make people never want to lift weights again, meant as a "punishment" for not finishing the season the way it should have been. Doyle just went a little too far this time. quit beating around the bush.

Schad quickly posted somewhat of a snarky follow-up tweet saying some parents are wondering whether the former players did the workouts after a three-week layoff.

"Everyone knows?" Has ANYONE who actually participated (columnists don't count) said this?

This coming from a Clone fan who claims to run a training center in Chicago but can't spell "Kinesiology"

Everyone knows?!?!? Wow. I didn't know that. How do you know that? Have you taken ANY time to think through your presumptions? Rhabdo is something that NO oNE can forsee. It is only kown in hindsight.

Why would Doyle want his players "never want to lift weights again"?

Dumb.

You're an idiot. I'm glad you know all of the facts and are nicely sharing with us. I'm hoping for the ban hammer. Jon.....anyone?

I would bet my mortgage that Schad's source is Prater's twin Shane

The more you post, the more ignorant you appear to be.

Though I won't call you an idiot I will say that not a single person on this site knows that because we weren't there, neither were you so you don't know that either. BTW, according to your logic current Indianapolis Colts Linebacker Pat Angerer must have also been PUNISHED pretty severely and he said thank you coach doyle can I have another. From that same article quoted above:

"The workout made us mentally tough and helped us look at challenges as great opportunities. The workout DID NOT push us too far, it just pushed us places where most people couldn't have gone on their own. Without Coach Doyle and the Iowa strength staff, the Iowa football program would not be anywhere near as talented as they are today. Coach Doyle showed me how to work hard and be a man, on and off the field.

I am very blessed and thankful that I got the privilege to workout under Coach Doyle. He took an undersized Iowa kid, that wasn't ready to play college football, and turned him into the 63rd pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Coach Doyle changed my life."
