ESPN--Best team in the Big Ten

From ESPN.com:

1. The Big Ten appears to be wide-open. Which team is the conference's best at this juncture?
Dakich: Right now, it's Iowa. You have to go by how you play, and Saturday night at Purdue, Mackey Arena was ridiculously loud and emotional. Purdue played great, but Iowa hung in there and won the game. I don't think Michigan State is nearly as good as it has been in the past, particularly without Denzel Valentine. For some reason, and I don't know exactly what it is, I'm not convinced by Maryland. Purdue is really good, but right now, man, Iowa beat Michigan State and they won at Purdue. That's pretty good.
The other team playing really well -- and Thursday's game at Purdue will be really interesting -- is Michigan. The two teams playing the best are Michigan and Iowa, but Iowa is the best team based on what the Hawkeyes have done.

Fraschilla: I've seen Iowa play, and I really like who they've got. I'm a big Jarrod Uthoff fan, and he went off again on Tuesday against Nebraska. And I still think Michigan State will end up being the best team by the end of the season. But the best team right now is Maryland. I like everything about them. Mark Turgeon does not overcoach. They have a good system. I absolutely love the way Melo Trimble has transformed himself from a scorer to a playmaker. Rasheed Sulaimon has fit in better than I thought he would. I love their size inside. They have the most depth in the league. They're about as good as we thought they could be. The schedule in the Big Ten is unbalanced, and they face Michigan State only once (Jan. 23 on the road).

Greenberg: Right now, today, Iowa is special, particularly on offense. Having said that, I think the best team in the Big Ten, in the big picture, is going to be Michigan State. This injury to Valentine has forced Eron Harris to get a little bit better. He doesn't defend the way he needs to, but he's gained some confidence. Bryn Forbes has made some big shots. Other guys have had to step up, which will make them better when Valentine comes back. Deyonta Davis is only going to get better. He does things you can't teach. The ball finds him off the glass. He makes crazy shots. Michigan State is going to continue to grow and develop.
I look at things in tiers. And I think the teams we've mentioned are in that top tier. But I'm intrigued by Ohio State. They've won six games in a row. The win over Kentucky isn't maybe what people thought it was at the time, but this team has started to develop an identity. They've started to get some Thad Matta toughness. You can see they've improved significantly. And then Michigan is so hard to play against.

Fraschilla: With some of these teams that are playing better, it might be a little bit of fool's gold. When you open the season as Indiana and Ohio State did, I don't know how good they'll be a month from now. I would caution myself to not get too excited about a team like Ohio State. The top of the league is going to go through East Lansing and College Park. And Iowa is a dangerous team.

I can't disagree with anything that was said. I think Maryland is the most talented team, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are the best. Basketball is such an intriguing game because of the intangibles. When I say intangibles I'm talking about confidence, momentum, toughness, teamwork, and leadership. Basketball is a game of streaks. A player or a team can go on a hot streak or a cold streak. The team that remains the most consistent and plays together will most likely end up on top, but it should be a fun ride.

I love how Fran has Iowa back into the thick of things in the B10 race. It doesn't get any better than this. I honestly thought the team would take a step backwards this year. Now I still thought they'd sneak into the tourney, but I didn't think they'd be as good as they've looked. There has a been a couple surprises (like Baer for example). Uthoff and Gesell are playing incredibly well. Woodbury is a great leader down low and he's so consistent. Uhl and Baer have really stepped up, and Clemmons is a great role player. Wagner has been more than serviceable in the minutes that he gets and those minutes are a great learning opportunity for him. Iowa's leadership and experience should bode well for them, but in the end a lot of it is going to come down to luck.

I think they need to buy into it. So far, I'm not sure that they view themselves as a top team. This is especially important for finishing out big games.

They're ranked, they have to at least think that they're decent. I mean it in the sense that I hope they don't think that they've already accomplished what they want to. I don't think Fran will let that happen, I just hope they keep working hard and don't think they can slouch off since they're in the top-25.

I'm with you. I stated many times that I thought Iowa would go as far as their bench play. Deep down, I wasn't sure it would be enough. No one saw Baer coming and with Wagner being solid backing up Woody in the post (and Woody staying out of foul trouble), Uhl has been able to start playing the wing position he is most suited for. Uhl is emerging as next years scoring leader, along with Jok. So, the bench has set the level for this team and it could be high. Iowa usually plays really good defense, but what they have displayed so far in the B1G has been outstanding. Stephen Bardo said it best, I think, during the PU game. He said that he believed Iowa was the best offensive team in the B1G and if they defense they played at PU stays all season and coupled with Iowa's ability to score, you have to consider them a contender.

Yes, this will be a fun ride.

P.S. Watched MSU completely humiliate Illanoy, last night. I don't think a win there is likely. I'll be satisfied with playing extremely well and having a chance at the end. If we do win? Watch out. Our B1G schedule is front loaded with tough teams (MSU 2x / PU 2x / @MD) and road games (5).

I get the sense that this team has a mission this season. I think JU's comments after the PU game shows this team probably isn't going to take things lightly.

JU: "We played with a set of nuts tonight and that's all I have to say" is pretty accurate to his quote.

Fraschilla - "Maryland's the best team"

Fraschilla - "Be wary of hyping up IU and OSU considering who they've played"

Me - (Looks at Maryland schedule and sees Penn St, NW, and Rutgers plus weak nonconference)

But i thought espn hated iowa n stuff

Everyone knows Don Jockish doesn't know anything about Iowa and his condescending lack of respect toward the Hawks is Cowherd-esque!

Of course, this is just a ruse ... by both parties.

As soon as Hawks lose a couple (like, most likely between 3 and 5 of the next 10), ESACCBigEastPN will start dissin' Iowa as paper tigers.

Bet yer britches ol' Iowa fans will also show their collective hypocritical butthurt by concocting statistical evidence of how good Iowa really is! Stuff like, no other team in College Basketball Nation has played more teams that average over 73.5 ppg with a winning record over the majority of the season, to date.

It'll be another epic battle, with Dean Donkitch and Jay Bilas carrying Cowherd and Herbstreits' respective torches of Iowa denegration.

I think IOWA is playing with a quiet confidence that is quite strong. The win at Purdue should convince them of how good they can be. Uthoff is the leader along with Gessell. Woody will never do much on offense but he is playing good defense and has done really well with limiting his fouls. Once our freshman get comfortable and add some bench scoring it will be hard for other teams to go on runs against us. The future looks bright at IOWA.

Yep, the Dakich curse....I've only heard tall tales of this condition, of which there seems to be no known cure. Many a man have died while trying to seek a secret cure, b/c it could be too late once diagnosed..... :p

The last time I heard about a team having quiet confidence, it was Chrissy Williams talking about the Iowa State football team that finished with 2 or 3 wins. He's forever ruined that phrase from me.

We've beat two conference championship contenders. I don't think anyone else has beat one.

Purdue beat Michigan. That's the 3rd best conference win and it's not even close to the quality win as either of ours.
