ESPN Article on Rudock

I've been very impressed with roodock. He's very heady, makes good decisions. He's composed, hasn't been easels at all. Throws a good ball, doesn't make many mistakes. Steps up in the pocket very well and even makes plays with his feet. I don't think we could ask for much more out of him. My only concern is that he takes a hit on a scramble and we lose him but you can't stop doing it because of that. Roodock is the man so far

I too, have been impressed by Jake this season. I think the thing that has impressed me most is his pocket presence. He stands in there, scans the field, and then takes off if nothing is there. He does NOT focus on one guy like JVB did last year, well, not as often anyway since he's been guilty of it a couple times.

Man, Rudock is probably one of the most improved QB's going from one season to the next, like ever. Considering he wasn't even ready to hand the ball off in blowouts last year.

Sorry guys, couldn't help myself from getting that shot in on Kirk. :)

Doesn't matter what side of the field you sit on regarding Kirt, the ****** he repeated regarding JVB and the QB situation last season to explain giving zero opportunities to Ruddock was such patronizing bunk, it's not even debatable. I proposed this around the end of October, last year, as just one clue pointing toward how KF was flushing the season.

As we watch JR's field leadership and command of the position continue to evolve (dare I say, beyond Ricky, on the whole?) it's absurd to believe he started from complete incompetence and ineptitude but has achieved this level, since last Thanksgiving.

Wait.....there were blowouts last year? Oh right. We were the team being blown out. Now I get it.

Imagine that:

"You just never know until you get into games,” Ferentz said. “To be a successful quarterback, it sure does help to have an awareness and self-control, if you will. And so far, so good. He's really done a great job with that.”

Probably wouldn't have lost a game if Rudock was the QB last year

No, I'm sure there still would have been plenty of losses, Dave, but maybe they would have won 1 or 2 more, ya know, since so many games were "so close" (as you guys like to argue so frequently in your apologies)?

A heady awareness to scramble, rather than curl up in a fetal position to take the sack ... Stepping up in the pocket and scanning the field, rather than locking in and still throwing it off target ... maybe those skills could have made a difference in a couple of those close games?

How 'bout this ... maybe some meaningful game experience, when there was absolutely nothing to lose and you had already decided to flush the season like it was as pointless and futile as a 2-minute drill at the end of half, could have helped teach him to avoid some of the throws that led to the NIU loss this year?

Nah, who am I kidding?! Ludicrous to even consider Rudock was competent enough to lose better than JVB, let alone that any live experience might have benefited him. After, all, look how well he's playing, now. That losing experience and stuff last year would have been beneath him -- probably detracted from his development.

Hey, thanks for the typical response, though.

I agree 100% with Jon's stance on not playing Rudock last year. Its obvious the offense was a train wreck so why throw a RS freshman in there and take a chance of completely killing any confidence he may have.

And if you really think KF was "flushing the season" last year then Im not sure what to tell you. Its absurd to think any coach at this level would even consider doing that. You have seniors who invested 4 or 5 years of their lives into the program and we have people who think the coach wanted to just **** away their last games.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but regarding what I have highlighted in bold; while this could have been a consideration, I would say this: 1) It makes a huge assumption that JR would lose confidence. And from what we have seen this season, his calm cool demeanor, I don't believe it. 2) It relies on being able to look into a crystal ball and "know" this season's offense would be better. 3) JR is really the main difference in personnel, on offense, this year to last.

And he has had an entire offseason, spring ball and fall camp to get more acclimated to the offense since last season. There are way too many variables to just sit here and say that Rudock would have played as well last year as a freshman as he is right now.

I think hes a good QB now but it's easy to see how good he can be if he keeps on developing. I still have issues with his deep ball but you can get better at that.
