ESPN article on Gatens

This guy is a bit challenged, factually. ''After Alford was unceremoniously cut loose''

Sorry, Eammon, SA was not fired. He left of his own accord.

And the reference to Gatens weight loss as improving his '' physical fitness''.
Gatens played over 91% of the minutes last year...he certainly was not in bad cardio-condition. He lost muscle in the offseason due to a different weight lifting regimen and cutting cals, but I suspect he is not really any better conditioned than last year.

I am not so sure we can say Alford left on his own accord either? It may look that way, but Alford choosing to leave may have been the best option over being fired???

Well, I'm not disputing your logic; however, I would imagine one needs to be at a completely different level and type of fitness to actually run up and down the court 91% of the minutes vs. standing still for %50 of 91%. Having the proper level of physical fitness to operate under Lickliter's 1930's peachbasket philosophy would not necessarily equate to being ready to go under the new regime.

I'm sure he was in great shape last year, albiet for different reasons. A gymnast who focuses on the rings is in excellent physical condition, but they are not gonna go out and win Grandma's Marathon. And vice versa.

But, the facts are indisputable....SA was not fired by Iowa ,and then went job hunting to get his position at NM.

He took the job at NM,and then resigned his position at Iowa. Case closed.
To imply otherwise is not factually correct.

like SA was going to be allowed to stick around ... come-on, be intellectually honest

Matt deserves the chance to finish up his Iowa career playing a position he's more comfortable with and having a great two final years.

Plain and simple: Alford could leave or be fired. He was out the door at Iowa and he knew it. He spun it nicely by making it sound he was leaving on his own for a new opporunity but the fact is he knew he was going to be canned.
