Eppy Epenesa on AJ Not Being Listed as Starter

Talk about a classy guy. Easy to see why Eppy is such a respected leader in his community

EDIT: Showed EPPY's quote to a buddy of mine who's been involved in high school officiating for years. First words out of his mouth, "Man I wish there were more parents like this guy."

Maybe we should take Ferentz at his word, as he expressed at the press conference, "I say it to our players every year, the depth chart right now is pretty meaningless."

He releases a depth chart, he's criticized. He doesn't release a depth chart, he's criticized. Next year he should release the depth chart and make everyone a starter. No backups. But then, someone would probably point out that you can't put 22 guys on the field at the same time, and critique Ferentz for not knowing that.

Consider me one of those that hopes to see AJ play the majority of snaps at the DE position. Having said that, Eppy's post exemplifies what it means to be a Hawkeye.

You haven't seen nothing yet. Just wait until the spring game/scrimmage. If AJ cleans up his mistakes against the run, even more fans will be calling for him to start.

AJE had some troubles setting the edge last year as I am sure he wasnt used to faster pulling linemen and super fast running backs in every game he played vs in high school. He will improve his visual recognition, first step and hands to ward off and control the edge. Some of his pass rush moves last year were great so we know he has the feet, hands and speed and skills to do it all.

And Eppy knows AJ got a lot of reps as a true freshman, was on an 8-5 bowl winning team that shocked the nation against Ohio St, Nebby, and almost Penn St. If we didnt already have a few very good TEs he could probably play both ways.

Eppy’s post exemplifies what it means to be a human being with a decent character — integrity, truthfulness, humility.

Being the #3 DE isn't like being the #2 Qb. He's going to play a ton. I guarantee you he'll work up a sweat out there every game. I'd rather he (and the other DEs) play less snaps every game so they are fresher in the 4th quarters of games anyway. I remember back when Iowas depth on the DL was thin and their starters were playing 85% plus of the snaps and were just dragging late in games. I guarantee you it cost us wins. This will flip that script.

I believe AJ has a great work ethic, by maybe he is not listed as I starter to just push him a little more. Either way, he will be a major contributor on defense next year.

Spring two-deeps = Any AP FB rankings = Spring Baseball standings

None of which mean a thing other than a point of conversation.

I'd seen elsewhere that some have said that in a world now with the Lavar Ball parent types out there it's pretty nice to see the polar opposite. And just imagine that it's taking place in the good ole heartland/fly over country. What the elder Eppy posted may not get the national pub it should but it couldn't ring louder about what should be all that's right with sports.
I remember back to when Jake Christensens Dad was running his mouth and how that left a bad taste in some folks mouths. I just can't see how that helps anything. It's one thing to have your kids back but that just isn't in their best interests no matter how much one thinks it is.

I’m from Waukon, Parker Hesse’s hometown. To be fair, I probably left before he was born, but I’m still cheering for him. Waukon only gets maybe 1-2 division 1 athletes every 25 years. But, to get to the main point here, it seems like people have been dogging on him for years because of his low sack total. He’s not big enough, what not. But he’s really learned how to be in position or how to work with his size and speed limitations really well. I think he’s pretty damned good. I’m sure even Parker can see A.J. is a better athlete, but just by being a better athlete doesn’t make a better player. I bet they end up splitting snaps almost 50/50 when it’s done this year, and Parker can teach A.J. quite a bit. Parker is also probably the leader of the defense, as a senior with the most playing expereince. The kids got heart and leaves it all on the field. He doesn’t have a pro future, this is it for him. And I bet neither kid cares about a starting title as much as the fans do. They just want victories. I say let it be for now.

Parker Hesse has made a lot of great plays along with a ton of good plays. He got thrown in as an undersized frosh for and all american in Ott and he played very well. That tip to himself TD and Nebby in 2015 was spectacular and needed.

I dated a girl from up there years ago too. Really pretty country up there. Your absolutely right about both of them. Hesse may not be physically how you would build a DE on a video game but he's played really well for us. He's good at staying in his lane and getting hands on passes. (I bet he's gotten his hands on as many as the taller Nelsons have or close to it) There's more to playing DE then just rushing upfield on the outside shoulder of the tackle every play that's for sure. We're fortunate to have the depth on the line we do they'll all benefit from having each other to play off of and get breaks from
