After watching the team play in person I came away very encouraged about the next phase of Fran's program. Savannah State was not a good team at all so I acknowledge that up front but I came away thinking Fran has a lot of shooters and guys that can score the ball. He also has a lot of long players and interesting complimentary pieces. This team is way more athletic than last year's team....it's noticeable. It will be intriguing to see how they grow and develop over the course of this year.
You can sense that they are going to be wildly inconsistent as the many young players learn how to play and win at this level. The non-con schedule is brutal and I am not sure they are ready for the prime time yet.
Strengths
- Shooters/scorers
- Length/Athleticism
- Lots of pieces
Weaknesses
- defense -> team concept & moving feet against smaller/quicker players
- rebounding
- true post presence
- experience
There was not really a guy that played that I thought could not help the team or grow/develop going forward. Kreiner probably struggled the most but he has some potential that you can see. Even the last guy in rotation in Daley looked good. Uhl is a little bit of an enigma looking bad for a period and serviceable other times.
I really like the PGs in Williams and J Bo. Completely different players that both bring something to the table. J Bo can shoot it as we know. Cook is a freak learning how to play at this level but he is already starting to get it figured out. Baer can stroke the 3 and gives you heady effort plays. Wagner can put it on the deck and drive it - very athletic. Pemsel has an excellent feel for the game, great passer and showed a nice touch around the basket today and at the line. Ellengson actually made shots so we will see if that lasts but great to see. Jok is really, really good as we know. As I mentioned before I really liked the looks of Moss & Dailey as players. Not sure how they both find minutes though!
We may lose a guy or two in the off season just because of the lack of minutes available. The neat part is we will add 2 legit big men in Garza & Nunge to this young group next year. We could get very good in a hurry by next year. Exciting possibilities.
