Encouraged

After watching the team play in person I came away very encouraged about the next phase of Fran's program. Savannah State was not a good team at all so I acknowledge that up front but I came away thinking Fran has a lot of shooters and guys that can score the ball. He also has a lot of long players and interesting complimentary pieces. This team is way more athletic than last year's team....it's noticeable. It will be intriguing to see how they grow and develop over the course of this year.

You can sense that they are going to be wildly inconsistent as the many young players learn how to play and win at this level. The non-con schedule is brutal and I am not sure they are ready for the prime time yet.

Strengths
- Shooters/scorers
- Length/Athleticism
- Lots of pieces

Weaknesses
- defense -> team concept & moving feet against smaller/quicker players
- rebounding
- true post presence
- experience

There was not really a guy that played that I thought could not help the team or grow/develop going forward. Kreiner probably struggled the most but he has some potential that you can see. Even the last guy in rotation in Daley looked good. Uhl is a little bit of an enigma looking bad for a period and serviceable other times.

I really like the PGs in Williams and J Bo. Completely different players that both bring something to the table. J Bo can shoot it as we know. Cook is a freak learning how to play at this level but he is already starting to get it figured out. Baer can stroke the 3 and gives you heady effort plays. Wagner can put it on the deck and drive it - very athletic. Pemsel has an excellent feel for the game, great passer and showed a nice touch around the basket today and at the line. Ellengson actually made shots so we will see if that lasts but great to see. Jok is really, really good as we know. As I mentioned before I really liked the looks of Moss & Dailey as players. Not sure how they both find minutes though!

We may lose a guy or two in the off season just because of the lack of minutes available. The neat part is we will add 2 legit big men in Garza & Nunge to this young group next year. We could get very good in a hurry by next year. Exciting possibilities.

Baer's shooting stroke looks like it's much improved. Last year he was serviceable but bricked a lot of 3s. He's shooting with a lot of confidence which is huge for this team.

He shot .394 from 3 pt land last year, pretty darn good to be around 40%.

The only issue I've had with Baer early this season is he still has some issues handling the ball - if it goes in his hands at any time anywhere on the court - chances are it's getting knocked out.

Absolutely. I was commenting on the fact that when he missed he seemed to miss pretty badly. His stroke looks even better this year. Remember Uhl shot 45% from 3 last year, and 50% in conference. Sometimes stats don't tell the whole story.

Baer has 0 TOs through two games. I don't recall him looking shaky with the ball either.

well, that's just fitting - he's the only guy on the damn team without a TO through 2 games, haha - i deserve 2 lashes. It just seems that it's always getting swatted out of his hands

He's going to have to help Williams and Jok out with ball handling Thursday night, so we will see how he handles it.

I have high hopes for Baer. He has played very well in big games. I was at the Drake game last season, and we would have lost the game without Baer. He also played very well against VIllanova, Not intimidated at all.....

I think we can rely on his three, With Baer and Jok sharpshooting and Wagner, Pemsl and Cook inside, we just might be hard to handle as the season goes on. If Brady continues to shoot as well as he did against Savannah State and Jordan gets into the groove, we will strike fear into the hearts of our unworthy opponents.....

Bring Seton Hall on.....

Think about how many games we have lost in the last 6 years by only 5-7 points that we have shot like 15-20% from the 3 point line. I remember several 3-18 type performances. Just made you want to bang your head against a wall. Having so many guys that can knock down a 3 sure seems like a luxury and will keep us in a lot of games. Just a matter of getting guys open looks and PG play, if we can get guys open looks we may just actually surprise some people and make that tourney!

Very encouraged with what I saw yesterday and a great first game for my two kids to attend. While excited about what's to come two things came to mind. (1) Our defensive has to improve, which I'm sure it will and (2) how good of a perimeter team will we be against quality opponents who aren't going to give us wide open looks. It was a phenomenal perimeter performance yesterday, but I saw more open looks in last nights game than I did in pregame warm ups.

That said I think we have a lot of good things to look forward to.

Just keep in mind the level of competition they've been facing. I went to one of the games and I was not impressed with the defense at all, especially on the perimeter. I can see good outside shooting teams giving us all kinds of fits.

That's true, the level of competition so far has been low- a bit better than Regis. In some ways, SH is really our first real game. I think the guys may know that. We'll see.

You don't see really good defense in games against terrible teams often. Hopefully that's the case.
