Early Christmas Gift for Wisconsin

After reading through all the whiny posts from the anti-KF crowd, I think it's important to realize we gifted a hard fought game to a good football team...a preseason #4 team.

In teams that are evenly matched...turnovers are always the key to the football game. What was unusual about last night though is that most of the mistakes were on special teams and they were critical to the outcome of the game.

1) The Beyer error. This play wasn't his fault. It is the punt returners job to make sure all player are aware of the live ball. Our returner backpedaled away from the ball and he should have been making sure everyone was clear. You could also argue he should have caught that ball.
2) The returner fumble. This absolutely killed us. It was a nice return...would have set us up at the Wisconsin 45. We had momentum after scoring the previous possession. I big, big turnaround for Wisconsin.
3) The punt returner catch at the 3. Another huge play that cost us field position...this just can't happen...you put your feet on the 10...if you go back...you let it go. Simple.

The Iowa defense played a very good game. This wasn't the Wisconsin of last week. They came in motivated and mentally prepared for a trench war...and that's what we got. Against BYU, they didn't depend on their running game and they didn't pound like they did last night. The were reestablishing who they are. That being said...up to the critical drive they had punted on 7 of 9 possessions...and one of the two scoring possessions was the punt botch at our 10 yard line. Enough said.

The two punt game miscues also put our defense back on the field right away. Every Wisconsin series is a body blow...this cost us late in the game. It also took possessions away from our offense.

Iowa's offense had 404 total yards...drove the ball the length of the field several times...and had great opportunities. On the two drives to the five...we just didn't execute when we had the chance...plain and simple. Wisconsin made the plays they had to. Contrary to what some think...a sneak with a 240 QB isn't a bad call. On the other one, if Ross takes on Connelly rather than try to cut him...IKM would have been a handful to stop from scoring...he had a full head of steam and it was one guy to stop him.

If you want to be critical of our offense...it's that late in the fourth...they just didn't do what it took to win the game. Stanley missed on throws he should have made late in the fourth quarter...the one to Hockenson stands out that would have given us field position at our 35 or 40. Up to that point...they played well in my opinion.

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. These players are coached up. It's on the players...not the coaching staff.

Just one sustained drive and the game is ours.

Wisconsin did a good job of negating two of our best weapons. Fant had 3 receptions for 29 yards and Epenesa had 1 assisted tackle for the night. Wisconsin also made much better use of their first down plays picking up good yardage to leave more options for 2nd & 3rd through most of the game.

Beyer was clearly at fault on the punt return if you watch the play. He had his back to the ball the entire time from as far out as 10 yards from the ball while it was coming to rest on the ground. Who or why is he trying to block someone if three guys are standing over the ball watching it come to rest. He had no idea where he was.
