Duke/Michigan

Singler having a bad night is not uncommon. He's still good, but he's one of the most overrated players in the country, IMO. Since (and including) the game against UNC in Durham, he's shooting 39.9% from the floor, and that is buoyed by games against Temple and Maryland (combined 20/34, or 58.8%). He shoots average/poor against better competition.

Against teams that made the NCAA Tournament this year, Singler shot 38.9% from the floor (90/231). If you also include the two games against Virginia Tech (a team that many expected to make the field), he shot 38.3% (100/261).

He's still a good player, but he's no superstar. I'd take Smith and/or Irving over Singler in a heartbeat.

Exactly what I was going to say. If you expect Singler to shoot well, you obviously don't watch Duke much. He's 5 for his last 39, 13%, from three since the middle of February. Also Duke has shot way too many threes in almost every game since Irving got hurt, they don't have a true point who can create for others. Smith is great at scoring but doesn't have the ability to create for others like Irving has.

For comparison's sake regarding Singler, take a look at what Nolan Smith has done against the same opponents (NCAA tourney teams+Virginia Tech):

FGM: 143
FGA: 301
FG%: 47.5%
Season %: 46.4%

3FGM: 33
3FGA: 88
3FG%: 37.5%
Season %: 35.6%

As shown here, Smith elevates his game against top competition, like all truly great players do. Singler takes a step back, like most players do. That's not an insult. He's just not a truly great player. He's in the next tier.

As a Michigan fan, I can't complain much about the reffing. I hated how the game was called but it was pretty consistent which is all you can ask. The announcers kept saying Smith was the best player on the court. That may be right, but when Morris decided to go he was unstoppable and he needed to do that much earlier. Michigan shot pretty poorly, Hardaway especially and still had a chance to win the game.

As for the future-It's pretty bright. Next year they will lose Douglas and Novak who are important, but in terms of talent, both are pretty replaceable. If Bundrige or Burke can help out next year at the two, that team could be a serious contender for the Big 10 and perhaps sweet 16 or so. They need another guy who people have to respect in shooting and penetration. That guys needs to be a better Morris in terms of shooting or a new guy who can penetrate. Another need would be Horford bulking up and becoming another inside force. Right now, Morgan is it. Smotryc just isn't a powerhouse but his game is good when he can play outside as a 4. I really like the attitude of the team though and I think that's what got them where they are.

Its amazing how much of a difference Morris makes. Stu Douglass is an absolut liability out there. I could not believe how bad he looked yesterday.

He's a decent defender. Probably as good as anyone else on the outside. He also can get smoking hot but not often. Novak is still my favorite of all time. Always undersized, always not quick enough but he's got a ton of heart.

Michigan has no Seniors...everyone is back.
