Don One of the Best

Iowa should take advantage of his presence on campus to finally retire his number.

Who would show up for a jersey retirement ceremony in the middle of May? Or are you suggesting they do it during commencement?

Neither are good ideas.

Don certainly was one of the best, if not he best center ever to play at Iowa. I remember listening to the Hawks on WHO radio way back then. Hawks were good but unfortunately OSU had one of their best teams ever, with Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Larry Seigfreid and Mel Nowell. Don and Jerry Lucas battled to a standstill when we lost by one point at Ohio State.

Loved Nelson when he played for the Celtics. He had a championship ring or two....

His jersey with number 19 on it hangs in Boston Garden.....

:D

Who cares about a retirement ceremony. Just retire the damn number already.

I recently got copies of two DVD's from the University of Iowa Library collection. They are a highlight reel from the 60-61 season in which Iowa finished second to Ohio State, and a 1962 tribute to the career Nelson had at Iowa. Watching those films, Nelson was really the only guy on the team whose game would have translated well into the modern day.

BTW, Nelson won 5 championship rings as a player.
