"Doesn't Look Good for Payne"

Sounds like his return is highly unlikely. Looks like he also had a torn oblique muscle to go with a sports hernia. I feel bad as I was one who was kind of ragging on his play early in the year.

Well, you should feel bad. You likely caused it. The poor kid probably was under such stress from a dufus fan ragging on him that he developed the hernia and the oblique tear.

I think to be clear Fran is saying he likely won't be back this year. Let's hope he gets well and can return in the fall.

I really hope those first few lines were just a joke. The OP feels bad for ragging on Cully's play, because he was playing with these injuries (or at least playing with considerable pain before the last straw) at the time. It wasn't his fault that his game was off like that.

I don't have time to read the article this morning...did they act on this early enough that it won't cost him a year of eligibility? I hate it when these guys get hurt and it costs them a year because they crossed the "magic line" the NCAA puts out there, by a game or two.

He's still eligible for a medical redshirt. He only played in like 5 games, IIRC.

D*mn, I forgot to click on the sarcasm icon when I typed that. Jon, where is that button on this new site?

Why would he come back and play this year anyway? The conference season just got underway, he's at least another month out from recovering (if he's lucky) and the season would be almost over if he were able to return.

He will get his yr back via medical redshirt so he really doesn't lose anything. He gets another free year of education and could possibly even start grad school on Iowa's dime. Cartwright has 1 more year left and we don't have any PGs coming in (yet). This is a no brainer.

Cully came to Iowa because an injury made another team back off of him as I recall. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be wise to get another JC PG for next year to guard against what looks to be shaping up as an injury-prone career.

cully liked iowa from start, he just didnt have an offer. he missed iowas elite camp due to the floods.

he decommitted from bama when gottfried left. he considered Wazzu but then Bennett left, so he came to iowa.

he was undercut around Christmas is senior year and damage a couple vertebrae. he had since been given a clean bill of health. however, it woudlnt surprised me if the trauma from his initial fall was the start of the sports hernia.

Cully lit up Michigan with 25 pts in the B10 tourney last year. When healthy he can be a very good player.

Go Hawks!!!!!!

Thank you for this post. People have forgotten just what Cully was able to accomplish last season being basically the only PG on the roster. To finish the way he did on his biggest stage was hugely positive.
Payne would still be the starter if healthy and Iowa would be better off for it. I like Cartwright a lot, but I still think he is simply a "stop-gap" player, meaning he fills a much needed void, for now. Cartwright does a lot of good things and he is perfect player that Iowa needed coming off the bench.
Get healthy Cully, we will be looking forward to see you again on the court next season.

Cully & Cartwright are fine as back up players. Until Iowa upgrades at PG they are going to struggle. Payne showed last year he could not consistently beat guys off the dribble. That is one of Iowa's main problems right now, they don't have multiple off the dribble threats. Cartwright is better than Payne off the dribble due to his athleticism, and strength. You just can't take the "next" step until Iowa gets a consistent playmaker.

I can't agree with you at all. We will see when both are healthy and see what each does. They are two different players in a style that fits both. Look at the step Darius Morris has made as a soph. Judge the healthy Payne that has experience not the freshman who had no backup. Remember one thing Cully did have more assists than turnovers and was 4th, I believe in scoring.
I think Cartwright showed he belongs tonight, he needs more breaks, but depth limits that, just like Cully last season. It will be nice to see them both healthy at the same time.

Last year I actually said I really like the look of Cully's shot and was wanting to see him shoot more. I don't know that you can compare Morris and Payne, just because one player improves does not mean automatically all players improve or improve at the exact same clip. I have not seen Morris play this year other than when they played Harvard and I don't remember much of him. Payne was hurt last year to some extent and he was bulked up like all the Iowa players. He was just not quick enough to consistently get to the basket and create like Frans great guards at Sienna. I think him and Cartwright compliment each other well. I think Cully is more of a "true" PG but Cartwright is the better creator in that he is just quicker, and stronger than Cully. I think both are OK and would be great back up players but if you expect Iowa to get better in a hurry Iowa needs an upgrade at PG. You cant' really debate that.

Iowa needs depth at the position that what isn't debatable, we need both healthy not an upgrade. Morris is currently the best PG in the BT, I am not saying Payne would make that leap, but look at how every returning player is better, one would believe Payne would be better. We just don't agree and that is okay, let's see how it turns out.
