Does DJK's arrest, suspension help team?

While fans are wringing their hands over DJK's personal tragedy (of his own making), the waste of tremendous talent, the possible jeopardy to a NFL career, is there a chance that his suspension/removal will actually help the team as it prepares for the Insight Bowl and the 2011 schedule?

The season-long sideshow that was DJK is over. The coaches no longer have to deal with that distraction. If he was a disruptive force on the field and in the locker room (and I don't know whether he was), he's no longer in a position to do that. There's now an opportunity for other players to step up and show what they can do.

Handled properly, coaches can use this to reinforce the message to the herd about what will and will not be tolerated.

From a team standpoint, this can be a unifying event. Hopefully it will be.

From a purely football perspective, the team is better when he's on the field. But from a chemistry standpoint, it's hard to say.

It's hard to say. The only thing I know at this point is that I'm really disappointed in the news and glad that I didn't invest in a bowl trip this year.

It will definitely hurt recruiting.

Really? How? KF has a good record of running a clean program and is respected by other coaches and recruiting "experts." I'm having a hard time picturing this one arrest damaging that much.

Tweeter, I sure hope I'm wrong, but I have heard that even the French family has had concerns about Iowa City and some of the past problems with football players.

You'll find problems at any University, this isn't something unique to Iowa City.

As far as team chemistry, my only concern is who else might be involved on the team.

Didn't the story mention something about electronic media showing DJK in the act? For Gods sake please tell me he didn't have photos of other players on the team doing stuff.

LOL. He lives in CR. It isn't any better up there. If I was a parent I would sure as hell rather have my kid 20 minutes away if I was worried about stuff like that instead of half way across the US.

As for the game, it could help or the team could just lay down. A lot depends on how the remaining seniors want to go out.

Really? If I was a parent and another school mentioned how Iowa's star player was a big time drug dealer and the head coach had no idea, that isn't something that would reflect positively on the program. And even if he wasnt actually dealing, the other schools will put that in the recruit's parents' minds.

As for the reference to the French family. Oregon was in the press the whole offseason for the mess involving Jeremy Masoli and his three arrests, and also this year the domestic charge with LaMichel James. And ND coaching staff was put in a negative light for the incident of safety with the death of the student filming in the tower. As for the parents concern, I 2nd the opinion that if they are truly concerned with that, having their son 20 min south would be preferred. Also, good parenting the first 18 years of life goes a long way in the decisions student athletes make when away from home.

This is the elephant in the room, isn't it?

It is. These guys are together on and off the field, so who have to ask...who simply knew about this? And who was in on this?

As for the team, I'm not sure we're better off. DJK wasn't the only reason this team's apparent lack of chemistry. There were/are other issues, I'm sure.

The feeling is mutual. I don't like this team very much either. A cherry on top of a massive failure of a season.

No hoffa, it isn't lots of laughs. If your trying to tell me thats false information your full of you know what. I would rather have my kid 20 minutes away as well, but I'm not the one with the input. As far as the other schools under consideration, I think Iowa is much cleaner and I hope we land the kid.
