DMR/Hanson's article on Mr. Davis

wow Settle's quote is interesting. Iowas front court was so good that year, even without Okey. They just might have done more damage had he not been hurt.

I'm just glad Davis is getting the credit he deserves. Don't forget, after leaving Iowa, he went to Drake and built that team into a championship team with his son Keno.

In the days of Lute and Mr. Davis when one game was over you couldn't wait for the next game... I haven't felt that way in years........

I can't wait for the next game.............

Sam was the most talented player on that team and it was not even close.

Too bad he injured himself.

I was blown away to read that Mr. Davis has now been away from Iowa basketball for as long as he coached it. Time continues to fly by.

You can thank Bob Bowlsby for treating Mr. Davis like crap.

I was at the Iowa/Northwestern game in Mr. Davis's final home game and the crowd started a Fire Bowlsby chant.

What a arrogant jerk Bowlsby was.

Bowlsby was just trying to get the program to the next level. Unfortunately he trusted Alford with the job.

Apparently there are a lot of people who forget how frustrated many fan were becoming with Davis....rarely challenging for the Big 10 title, padding Iowa's record with non-conference patsies, sneaking into the tournament with an 8 seed...yes, they would win the first game, and then usually got bounced in the second game.

He was treated terribly...on that I agree...but to think many fans didn't want a change is revisionist history.

I didn't have a problem with the initial hiring of Alford. After the Stoops thing many people (boosters specifically) wanted the next hot name. Alford was that and I think the boosters pressed Bowlsby to hire him.

I did have a problem with the contract extensions he was given. Bowlsby tied his hands with those and made it hard to fire him.

Not a fan of Bowlsby but the hire of Alford looked good at first. I know I was excited to have him.

It was time for Davis to move on, but the way Bowslby sent him out was what irked me.

Fry was sort of encouraged to retire and it was handled much better than how Davis was "asked" to leave.

You can thank Mary Sue Coleman and her administration for the lame duck year and all the bad PR that went with it. That was not Bowlsby's doing. The majority of people wanted a coaching change and were ecstatic over the Alford choice. A lot of revisionist history in this thread.

I was there, chanting! I still love Mr. Davis

I remember listening to the pre-game and post-game show on the radio for Davis' last game and 75% of callers called in to say they were excited for a coaching change to take us to "the next level". The stupid next level phrase was used about a billion times. Pretty comical looking back on it

I was also in favor of the Alford hire. I felt that the program had grown stale and had bought into the notion that Alford was going to be a coaching superstar. I continued to support him long after everyone else I know had grown tired of him. In retrospect hiring Alford was a bold move on Bowlsby's part but it just didn't pan out.

actually there was a major rift between Bowlsby and Dr, Tom, BB was mad because of when it was brought up getting Iowa to play UNI when BB was their AD, Mr. Davis said Iowa had nothing to gain by playing UNI, BB took it personally.
BB tried to fire Mr. Davis the year he was hired, but the regents stepped in and told him the U of I honors their contract, so BB waited til Dr Toms contract expired and refused to renew it, the fans wanting change was he out on not renewing the contract and if you notice BB wasted no time in leaving Iowa for Stanford after getting rid of Mr. Davis.
this comes from a regent at the time

No it wasn't. It's been said before by people close to the program that BB fired Davis on his own. He's been hammered for it by the media since.

BB also interviewed for the Duke AD job. He was looking for a way out prior to going to Stanford.

Like most AD's, he's overpaid and selfish.

There were several high ranking athletic department officials that told me their side of the Mr. Davis/Lame duck story, a year or two after the change. All of their accounts were the same...that Tom came to Bob and wanted to resign...and Bob took him up on it...and then Tom had a change of heart, but Bob did not.

Not saying which side is the truth, but that is definitely one side of it.
