DL for next year and beyond

Anyone have some info on the future of the DL? I know Binns, Daniels and Daniels but who else are some guys that will see playing time? Thanks

No one. Rumor I heard is that the "FIRE NORM" campaign has won and we will be getting Greg Robinson from Michigan and he will put in his base 3-3-5 to help us defend the spread, thus Binns, Daniel and Daniels will be the key linemen next year.

Dude you are too funny. I haven't seen a thread on your avatar yet, but nicely done....that **** is funny.

on the post game interview Ballard was listing off linemen for the future - he said that Davis 'needed to get things turned around' so he could see the field. Not sure what he meant about that as there was no elaboration beyond the statement.

Ballard has taken Davis under his arm. So, that comment is telling. Iowa has not been able to get any real significant production from D linemen that have come in physically ready to contribute in the Ferentz era. I would hate to have Davis be one of these guys.

The line rotation next year looks to be Binns, Daniels, Daniel, Alvis, and Bigach.

However, another young player or two could emerge. There were a couple of guys that looked a bit like King types that were recruited a couple of years ago like Hopkins and Covert that I had a hard time believing would develop into B10 starters, but they could prove me wrong.

And then there are guys like Johnson, Ferguson, and Davis from last year that really looked like they could develop. Then there are others like Hardy and Trinca-Passat that looked promising coming out of high school.

Basically, the material should be there. Binns and Daniels are legitimate B10 starters.

It would be nice if one of the bigger guys like Ferguson or Daniels can emerge as a big body in the middle and then have Daniel, Alvis, Hardy or one of the other end types emerge as a good corner pressure guy.

Having a soon to be 240 lb All-American middle linebacker should help.

I have a feeling Carl Davis ends up being an OL. IA just doesn't have a great track record of utilizing and developing taller, bigger DL - there have been a handful, but the majority of IA DTs tend to be smaller, quicker guys that have high motors and are agile. I just don't get that vibe from Carl Davis. However, I think Ferguson and Davis have a better chance.

I think the DL will definitely be the talk of the spring. I'm also curious re other player development, namely the '09 and '10 recruits.

And I agree about Morris' development. From everything I've read and heard about him I have this feeling he'll be the defensive leader next season and will "will" guys to bigger and greater things, hopefully pushing some guys this spring.

Isn't Iowa looking at a juco DE?

We are, it's Jared Ebert out of Iowa Western Community College. But I've heard the coaches will only offer him if he's able to graduate at Christmas and enroll early. This tells me they feel confident about who we already have because Ebert is a **** recruit and would commit to Iowa if we offered (if you believe the "insiders" that claim to know him well).

While some folks have their criticisms of the Iowa defensive philosophy, one of its strengths IMO is that the constant preparation year to year, month to month, week to week and day to day doing what they do, and doing it well, allows for younger and inexperienced players to come in and have success.

Because they have drilled the same things for a few years, it allows them to play at a faster speed when they get their chance, and they are not asked to save the world, rather, just do your assignment. Then, when you have breakout athletes like Clayborn, Roth, Babs, King, etc, it makes them that much better.

There will be a drop off in production next year...the key will be just how much. I felt there would be a huge drop off in production after King and Kroul were gone...there wasn't.

Norm speaks very highly of Alvis. Bigach is a name that gets tossed around a lot, too.

Next year's Iowa D won't have big expectations from the outside, but they will be upper half of the Big Ten...if the offense can do what I think it has the potential to do, should be fun.

My guess is that was a remark about Davis needing to get his academics in order. Davis was a guy who had passed the clearinghouse by just a narrow margin. Thus, it's not surprising that he might take a bit for him to get acclimated to the new academic environment.

The "no-brainers" complementing Daniels, Binns, and Daniel are:

Bigach, Alvis, Forgy (he's received some praise too), and Nardo (really solid guy)

As for other who could make noise, I like:
D. Johnson, Trinca-Pasat, and Ferguson

I also think that Carl Davis could make noise, however I anticipate that Ballard may have been indirectly remarking about academic issues concerning him. Thus, for Davis to see the field, he's going to have to make sure that he can handle both his academic AND football responsibilities.
