DJK comments on Ferentz

This is from a HawkeyeSports story written his freshman year. It’s kind of sad to read these glowing comments from DJK about Ferentz knowing in hindsight their relationship deteriorated as the years went by.

....Johnson-Koulianos might model himself after Harrison on the football field, but he is trying to emulate Ferentz in the game of life.

"I heard nothing but the best of the best about Coach Ferentz before I came here," Johnson-Koulianos said. "He has a demeanor of business. Anything he's said to me I'll always remember. Whenever he's speaking, I feel like he's talking directly to me. He has such an understanding about what it means to be the head coach at Iowa. You see all the little things he does. Even if I wasn't a player for him, I would respect him just because of the way he does his job. He's just a great guy."

Well for all those that thought Ferentz was mean too him or whatever, maybe what happened provides some insight as to why.
My question for everyone is this: With all the off-field issues that Ferentz has had, why is there so little criticism of him for that? In asking, keep in mind I live in Michigan, so I don't hear everything. The main reason, I think I don't, is because of the success of the program.

I doubt Iowa has any more issues than most schools. You have 80 or so guys, 17-22 years old. Stuff will happen. If you work in a company with 100 adult employees you may have some issues. You could take 100 college students and have some issues.

I don't think players are out of control any more than any college, nor do I think the Head coach can deal with it all. Look at Michigan State FB and BB over the past 12 months, and both coaches are highly respected.

Mean to him? Really? Mean to him? What are we in the 4th grade?
