Difference between this Orange bowl and 2003

I havn't seen any discussion on the one of the biggest differences between this year and the last Orange bowl. The difference being that this year we don't have a player going to New York to take part in the Heisman trophy fiasco, we don't have our kicker and our Tight End getting national awards either. No distractions of this sort at all, just pure bowl prep. Even though I like seeing our Hawks getting national recognition, I like that the team is working all together the whole time leading the game.

Both good points. Actually, the 2003 Orange Bowl was apparently a learning experience for the staff also. Iowa teams have been very, very prepared for bowls since.

BTW - That USC team was absolutely loaded.

I wasn't taking the opposition into account in my discussion. I was focusing on what is different with our team alone. I like the fact that we are not nearly as distracted by outside things.

I don't think that the awards ceremonies that took place during the first week of December have or had anything to do with what happenes on the field in January. There is at least a 4 week gap between the awards ceremonies and the bowl game.

Both teams were; go back and look at both rosters and you'll see a load of NFL talent, and I'd be willing to bet that Iowa had more of it.

Ya its always a big problem having your players being some of the best in nation...thats why Iowa lost in 03

When you hear Kirk talking about how you have to stick with the running game, even when it's not working, he's talking about this game.

Iowa was he better team, Iowa was running very well, and then for some reason we decided to start passing non-stop ineffectively.

That game was such a disappointment because we played so far below our capability and USC played so high above theirs.

That game haunts me to this day. Everyone just remembers the final score and says Iowa got blown out, but nobody likes to remember the fact that it was tied at halftime and Iowa should have been up big. IIRC they had the ball inside the 5 yard line 3 times and came away with 3 points.

Exactly, I always have to bring those facts up. People forget the 10-10 halftime score. They forget that Iowa had TWO 1st and goals at the 1 yard line. And got 3 points out of those 2 trips alone. Remember how dominant that OLINE was? I'd take Nelson, Steinbach, and Gallery vs any NFL DLINE from the 1....

Iowa did not have a good bowl prep and KF has alluded to that many times. Had we played them the weekend after the Minnesota game I'd take Iowa on any betting line.

The differences between 2003 and 2010 Orange Bowls, as has already been mentioned:

1. The coaching staff has admitted that they prepared differently for bowl games now than they did for the '02 game
2. GT is not as good as the USC team we played
3. This year's Iowa team is not as good as the 2002 Iowa team IMO

This game is not as high-profile as the 2003 Orange Bowl, but should still be a good game.

I don't know if Iowa will ever have another team on that team's level.

The short answer is....

7 years. Below is an example of what seven years looks like in some worlds... (ignore the last picture)
