Did Iowa swing and miss on Waters twice?

I thought Iowa went after him 2 years ago although we weren't in his final two. What I'm wondering is what was Iowas interest in him out of HS? He would be the perfect qb for us and the guy is accurate and is just a competetive gamer. He's stronger and way more athletic then Rudock. It just sucks that a kid like that in Iowas back door somehow gets past them not once but twice.

What I take from his story is the smaller HS school kids that play multiple sports and don't go do those football camps are at such a huge disadvantage. He might be kind of lucky that his career got to where it is because of it. It's kind of like the AAU deal in basketball where it's a necessary evil for both the kids and the schools. It's just more exposure to seeing them. But football players are harder to evaluate when their competition is lower.

To my knowledge, Iowa never offered Waters a scholarship at any point. They could have recruited him out of high school in 2010, but they had their QB in Derby. They could have offered him after his first year as a juco starter in 2012, but they offered Sokol instead. They could have offered him in 2013, but they liked the depth they had with Rudock, Sokol, Beathard, and Shimonek (who signed out of high school in that class).

I wouldn't say they swung and missed. They never went to the plate.

That makes sense I just wasn't sure if they had offered him the year Sokol came or not. For some reason I thought they did and Sokol committed first kinda thing. I could be wrong. I never thought Iowa offered him out of HS. My swing and miss phrase was off in that sense. I just meant they had a kid that was good that they let slip through the cracks.

As far as taking Rudock over him I just don't know if I would or not.... After one year of PT both those guys had their ups and downs. Waters had the much stronger finish to the season. I'd lean towards Waters at this point based just on that and his physical upside is better. Wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if I'm wrong in fact I hope I am.

I personally think Rudock has a higher physical upside. Yes Waters can scramble but so can Rudock, he just isn't asked to do so nearly as much because of the system he is in. On top of that, Rudock is 2" taller. Rudock put up some pretty decent numbers for his first season of collegiate ball and I think he takes a big step forward this year and proves to you he's the man for the job. That's not to say Waters won't improve for his final season at KSU, I just feel that Rudock has a higher ceiling.

They had similar years last year. Waters overall stats were a little more impressive with fewer INT's. With that said, it's tough to compare the Big 12 to the Big 10. I think overall there is more focus on defense in the Big 10.

Hope your right.

DJL your right that it's really hard to compare QBs performances. They all have different teamates and offenses they run on top of the competition being different. Although Waters shredded Michigan and Rudock had what may have been his worst game against them. Albeit a really cold windy crappy day that no qb would have had a great day in passing in. So it just is what it is.

Not to derail this thread - Shimonek mentioned in your response - on a couple other sites it has been said that he is transferring from Iowa. Rumor, but I'd bet it is true based on what has been posted.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him take a step down to the FCS level. He's got some good physical tools, but I think between Beathard, Wiegers, Beneventi, and Boyle, NS was bound to be a career backup. Better to see the writing on the wall now and transfer after just one academic year.

That said, since Sokol is already gone, it makes me nervous that the third string QB will be a true freshman. (Granted, I can't remember a time where a Ferentz team has ever had to go 3-deep at QB. Maybe 2006?)

Interesting. He's a Texas kid so I'm sure going home or somewhere closer makes sense. When sandwiched between two guys ahead of you and a highly recruited kid right behind you. (plus the following years) I'd be more surprised if he did stay if he wanted to play. I hadn't heard that yet but the whispers around Kinnick during the spring game was that him along with even Beathard that if he didn't have a role that he'd have a look around. Now I haven't heard a thing about Beathard since so I would think all is well with him staying.

One of the rumored schools is Texas Tech.

If Rudock's wheels are back to normal (who knows if that is the case), they proved plenty capable...after he tweaked his knee he was a different player...less dangerous. But he has a lot of room to grow and get better after what was a very impressive debut season.
