Did anyone learn anything today?

Will anyone think twice before posting what their friend told them?

Is anyone going to think rationally before making wild accusations?

Will people stop reading twitter accounts and thinking that they are news?

Are we going to be any more skeptical when we hear things that seem too outrageous to be true?

Having followed this stuff for a while, I have to say I doubt it. The last week has been symbolic of my least favorite aspect of college sports, at least as it has developed in the last five years. Just sickening. Let's hope fans keep cooler heads the next time around.

I learned that as long as it took them to release that statement last night, they should have taken an extra 10 minutes to link to their drug testing policy and then spared us this nothing of a press conference.

Also, Iowa's drug testing policy, at $70K per year, apparently isn't as good as it should be. Too many people with first hand knowledge to ignore...we also learned that we very well could have had half the team failing a drug test, but because of the policy, won't miss any time for it.

1st time - Assessment and see a doctor
2nd time - 10% of season and/or postseason
3rd time - Dismissal from team

You're very kind. I'd like to see Jon take the ban hammer to some of the more guilty parties on this board, including the goofy looking kid that uses his picture as his avatar.

What has been proven to be incorrect? This press conference has not said anything. Kirk doesn't know a lot for a guy making over 3 mil a year.

Well, there was something to some of the rumors though. The smoke did produce three players in hot water. Something was going on. If information is out there, it will come out somehow.

It would also seem that DJK may have somehow beaten the tests...as Barta said several times they were reviewing protocols because it seemed that at least one player...may have gotten around the test.

Things I already knew:
1. people on message boards said Drew Tate was a Heisman candidate.
2. people on message boards speculated on whether Drew Tate and Brad Banks would be first or second day draft picks.
3. people on message boards said Stanzi is going to be drafted in the first 4 rounds and have a great NFL career
4. people on message boards didn't think it was a big deal to lose Angerer, Edds, Spivey, Moeaki, 3 offensive lineman, (and that we would be AN EVEN BETTER TEAM THIS YEAR!) or Wegher, Hampton, Gordon, French.
5. people on message boards thought we would go undefeated this regular season
6. people on message boards don't believe Ferentz could have seen a fake punt coming from Wisconsin and called a timeout.
What we learned today:
1. people on message boards who say they heard something from someone in the know are usually full of crap.

He apparently knows how to run a vastly superior program to the one over in Ames. Enjoying your early offseason?

Yes, you are making this a little too simple, Olive. Part of reading the boards and participating in them is learning to sift through the garbage.

The last time there was this much smoke, Lick ended up getting fired.

Yeah. I learned that the drug testing policy is a complete freaking joke.

They use med and pharm students to administer the tests? REALLY???

And maybe I'm just old fashioned...but shouldn't a positive result for an illegal substance at least cost you a game suspension?

If any of you ever thought that there wasn't a double standard when it comes to Division I athletes, well, you'd have to be a completely ignorant fool to believe that after today.

If ISU was throwing guys off the team for being arrested for drugs, you might have a point. I'm sure ISU's fans are at least enjoying the fact that their team isn't in the news for all the wrong reasons.

And he was still right: for what he's getting paid, Ferentz is woefully ignorant of what is going on at times.

I'm not claiming to be an authority on this subject, but, for whatever it may be worth, I'm a minister who has never touched marijuana or even smoked a cigarette, and I'm fine with a policy that a first time marijuana offender might not have to miss time.

Well, I'd generally agree with that but these young adults are public representatives of the university and are being sent to a top flight school courtesy of Iowa taxpayers.

So missing a game (you don't have to reveal the reason, nor should you) isn't that much to ask.

Ive learned that if you refuse a test or test positive for the first time you dont have to miss a game.

very sad.

hopefully the other players using illegal drugs on the team will get smarter and that will be a silver lining to a dark could.

All of that was public record, part of the university's conduct policy, and widely reported in the past week (I read about it in the Gazette on Friday, I believe).

I'm sensing some bitterness from the posters that were talking 10-12 suspensions in recent days. You guys should just be thankful the program is in good shape. That's what's important for the long term. The embarrassment you caused yourself on this board in recent days will be forgotten by most posters within a few months.

Here is what i learned....
You can do all the drugs you want and miss one game... wow way to go
Kirk sure doesn't seem to know what's going on when he is making 3 mil a year...

Hawk fans... are you honestly worried? i know i would be..

I learned there was much to do about little.

.......and that some people love the smell of dirty laundry.

How does ISU's drug testing protocol compare? Please enlighten us.

EDIT: Found it. "According to the athletic department’s drug testing policy, the first failed drug test results in a meeting with the team’s coach and the student athlete will be required to participate in a drug counseling assessment, a counselor then determining if intervention or rehabilitation is needed."

Level II Infraction [which includes violations of Drug Testing Policy; an arrest for drugs would be Level I]

1st Offense: Counseling, Community Service

2nd Offense: Counseling, Community Service, Suspension from 10% of competitions

3rd Offense: Indefinite suspension from competition with suspension from practice possible

In other words, the policies are similar if not identical, meaning at ISU you can also "do all the drugs you want and miss one game" (or no games). But in fairness to both schools, that's not really true, as the listed consequences are MINIMUMS - Kirk and Barta indicated today the first-offense punishment "depends on the situation" and could result in a suspension.
