Does everyone feel the Dolphins exec. went too far when he asked about his mother possibly being a prostitute?

I personally think that given her drug history and the supposed answer he gave the question about his dad, this isn't out of bounds. They are about the pay a 20 year old millions of dollars and such questions, if there is premise, are acceptable.

bad question to be asking

If Dez said that his dad was a "pimp" and that his mom worked for his dad, I think the only relevant question is the one that was asked. I have yet to here of any pimps that employ accountants or cashiers.

Excetp thet Dez said that he never said that...plus they are paying him, not his parents, not his friends they aer paying Dez ask questions to him about him...don't be stupid with questions which the fins were.

You're making a huge investment in this kid. Asking questions about his background is perfectly legit. He could have phrased the question better but when someone tells you their dad is a pimp and their mom works for them it doesn't take much to connect the dots.

So will it be ok for an NFL GM next year to ask Mark Ingram if he is a felon, because his father is?
The question asked to Dez Bryant is most certainly NOT legit, sorry.

Sure, they can ask whatever they want to. It's all relevant, especially the way off the field issues are being handled in the NFL. If you were interviewing to be the CEO of a fortune 500 company and your spouse had been investigated by the SEC do you think they would have some questions about that?

The manner in which the question was asked was uncalled for, but off the field and background issues are fair game. Dez's Whining about this is probably making the Dolphins, and many other NFL teams, glad they didn't pick him.

Now his mom is demanding an apology as well. [sarcasm] I mean how rude, She was a crack dealer, not a prostitute. the nerve of some people. [/sarcasm]

I didn't realize they asked Dez if he was a prostitute? And I would expect most teams to ask Mark Ingram about his father and their relationship, it would be irresponsible not to. Dez Bryant had all kinds of character issues coming into the draft teams are certainly going to check into and ask him about his background. The question was posed in a poor way, but it was not out of the blue and within the context of their conversation, it made sense.

Simply a bad question and what was the purpose even IF they were paying him $20 million? Even if she were what did that have to do with it? If he gave her some of the money, was that the problem? What was their concern? They pay players that don't have the best reputations that kind of money don't they? If I'm not mistaken, his mother or father weren't going to play.

Hey Dex, how's the view from way up there on the moral high ground?

A. I would not actually object if they asked Bryant about HIS character; my point is, since when is it ok to impugn a man based on what his parents have done?? If your mom was a felon, but you've led a crime-free life, and an job interviewer attempted to establish a link between you and your mom's behavior, how would you react?

B. Pls list "all kinds of character issues" that Bryant had? I heard something about associating with Deon Sanders and/or an agent, but is there more?

Pacman Jones was suspended because of the people he hung out with. this is 2010 in the NFL. These owners have the right to question who you associate with whether they are related by blood or not.

I think I can pretty safely say I have better morals than a crack dealer.

I would hope so. But if you slipped up along the way, out of desperation and survival instinct, would you think it's ok for someone who is interviewing your son to connect him with (and possibly punish him for) your crimes?

I'm not condoning anything Bryant's parents have done, nor do I think they are victims in any way. They are flat-out felons.
I'm trying to point out how absurd it is to tacitly imply that Dez is somehow a potential criminal by association. It's just not how things work in our society.

No one is implying he is a criminal. They are trying to understand what kind of people he surrounds himself with. Could it have been done in a more respectful manner? Probably, but like i said, in the NFL in 2010 you need to be worried about you asset's off the field behaviors and part of that is who they hang out with. You are paying these kids millions of dollars and I have no problem with them doing their due diligence and really no questions are off limits.

DP brought this up on his show today. He thinks the line of questioning is out of bounds because it is rather close-ended and inappropriate, and I agree. If Ireland had instead asked "what did your mother do?" after Dez said his mother "worked" for his dad, it would've allowed Dez to answer in an honest and non-threatened way. Ireland's line of questioning was at least somewhat interrogative.

I think it's fair to explore the past and present of an NFL player in pre-draft interviews, but it has to be done in a more appropriate and professional way.

Besides, he plays for the Dallas Cowboys now. The whole crack head/pimp thing is welcomed there, if not, a legacy.

I have not seen or read the way in which the question was asked, however, my assumption would be that the Dolphins were asking Dez the question to see how he was going to react to it. The way in which someone would react to a question like that would give you a good sense of their character and self-control. It's not like Dez was interviewing for a job at some fast food joint. It's too bad that the Steelers couldn't have figured out Ben's character before they signed him up to be the face of the organization. How's that worked for them? Ben may be a great QB, but he lacks in character and it's making the Steelers look bad. The Hawks are another good example. Look at what happened when they got sloppy with bringing in bad character. It hurt the program.

what did Ben do prior to being drafted that would have red-flagged him? What should have the Steelers asked him? "Is it ok to ride your motorcycle without a helmet or sexually assault a woman while riding on your motorcycle without a helmet?" LOL. It's an absurd line of questioning. It's like "so your dad was a teamster. was he connected with the mob?"

I'm SURE you guys would be ok with these questions. Hell, some of you are insulted when someone says "the hawks won't be anything special this year" but this sort of thing would not insult you? K.

All I'm saying is that you can get a lot of information on ones character in how they responsed to your questions. I don't know Ben's past. But if you told the Steelers that there was a question that they could have asked that would have given them a hint on Ben's character, I bet they would ask it no matter what it was. Ben obviously has a lack of respect and discipline and you never know what type of question could have brought that to light.
