Depaul vs. Iowa

I'm hearing Depaul mentioned with several of the same possibilities as Iowa, including Gregory tonight.

Depaul was once once of the elite teams in the country when Ray Meyer had it going, particularly after he had someone sit outside Terry Cummings' bedroom window pretending to be God and whispering to Terry to go to Depaul instead of Iowa. But their downward spiral has been even more dramatic and long lasting than Iowa's, despite sitting in the middle of one of the greatest talent pools in the country.

They have no on-campus arena, but are talking about building a small one (8000 seats).
What do they have that should be appealing to either coaches or recruits these days, other than being in the Big East--and even that's a mixed blessing for them.

No doubt I'm biased but I don't see that job or that program as being nearly as attractive as Iowa.

Thoughts?

I have to stick with Iowa's tradition, new facilities, CHA, and importantly POTENTIAL. We can be a perennial NCAA bid team.

2 reasons why I could see someone going to Depaul over Iowa:

Big East > Big Ten
Chicago > Iowa City

Being bad in the Big East does not make that equation work in my mind in terms of coaching interest. That conference is a meat grinder. Think about how many teams Depaul would have to leap just to get into the upper 7 or 8 in the conference and be considered an NCAA bubble team.

Much more difficult IMO.

I have not heard talk of a new arena for Depaul. In fact I heard Jean Lenti-Ponsetti argue last week in an interview that their arena situation at the All State Arena is quite good. It is not a bad building, but traffic at rush hour on the kennedy to get there is a nightmare...and so it can be up to an hour to get out there. Students have to take the a bus to the blue line, then ride the el. Not good.

Their are rumblings that the Big East is going to be shedding football members which takes some nice schools away..like Pitt,Cuse,UConn,West Va,Cinncy and Louisville...suddenly not such a great league.
Iowa is a much better job, which is why Ponsetti is making a big deal about paying a kings ransom for a coach...probably 2 million+....this is last gasp territory.

I know when the Finkel property came up in that interview with the AD,she pooh-poohed it,but I guess they might be looking at it quietly. A new arena would be at least 4-5 years away, even if they started moving on it now, tho,so I highly doubt it would really impact a coach's decision this week.

And as usual, Digger is completely full of fecal matter. He has talked up the Depaul job for about 20 years now...this sleeping giant has passed away while he has been touting them. Could they get good again? Sure, anything is possible, but the Iowa job is much better for all the usual reasons, money,BTN,money,Big Ten...ect.

Agreed on all points, JH. I was just throwing it out there because Kaplan usually is pretty solid with information. It would be doubtful that the new arena could impact a new coach decision unless they gave that coach a ridiculously long initial contract. And, as usual, Digger is living in the past.
