Defense

i hope the hawk Off line gets a chance to beat MSU's line in the Big 10 champ game.

we do need that really good 3rd and 4th Dee End And Dee Tackles to offer the starters some rest

I'm hoping the defense is top 5 this year.
They have the opportunity to be.

AJ is not coming back after this season
probably but you never know. the family values sometimes are focused on finishing the degree and education. Clayton stayed for that reason our.

if he is a sure 1st rounder yet wants to play his final season they can take out a 5 to $10 million insurance policy on him to guarantee that income and be set for life.

Who knows. He's happy here and he is a first rounder anyway. If he comes back he just has another year of being an every down player under his belt.

Precisely. He ain't coming back. Marginal players go pro after their Junior year these days, let alone lottery picks.

Clayton? And who are "they" that is going to take out this insurance policy?

The athlete can take out the policy, and the NCAA has ruled that schools can help with payment through the NCAA Student Assistance Fund. Also, the athlete can take out loans against future earnings. With current draft projections, Epenesa would definitely be a good candidate for such a Loss-of-Value policy:

Of course, if something truly devastating happened, this policy would probably come up well short of covering his NFL contract guaranteed money. But then again, he could quit his collegiate playing career right now, train solely for the NFL draft, and he could still end up getting hurt:

There is always risk, and there is always reward. You balance them with your own priority-system, and you make your best decision.

My goof, Clayborn, I think his mom really wanted him to get his degree. It is usually the player with his family that takes out the insurance policy, who else would it be? I am not sure how they fund these policies but it could be that the first payments are delayed until the end of the player's upcoming last football season. After their last college season then the insurance company knows the outcome of the policy. Also if a family can't afford the policy there should be at least one lending institution who could use the player's upcoming NFL future as collateral of payment and lend the family the money for the premium.

And who knows how much the total premium would be, $10K, $5K, $20K??

Thanks, very interesting info about the NCAA potential for funds to pay for a policy.

I think just the top 10 potential picks needing this type of policy is a little general in nature. For example, if the #14 pick is the first safety of middle linebacker picked in the draft then they are the TOP pick for their position and I would think they could command a pretty good initial pro contract with decent guaranteed money and a good salary.

As was said, barring a severe injury he's a first rounder no matter what. Even if he comes back and other teams double him all year and his stats reflect that, he will go first round of he has a good year this year.
Fact he might want his Sr year to show more of being an every down player, because if you go first round, they expect you to come in ready for what ever they throw at you.
Also with the NCAA allowing it, I don't think the university is going to mind paying insurance policies for first round picks to come back. I would hope not anyway. Because if you don't think Clemson, bama, ECT are covering their first rounders policies, your high.

Don't remember which radio show or host, but the show had a guy from some obscure northeastern newspaper about two years ago. He made the point that it's deceptively easy to see which programs are cheating the most by who does NOT leave early for NFL.

If TJH left with 2 years of eligibility left, Iowa has no chance with AJE and frankly who could blame the guy. He’ll be guaranteed $20 million, vs getting a head injury at Iowa and never playing again.

It's not cheating if the NCAA allows it.

NF and AJ have different upbringings, they are different people.
Like my mom (I'm sure many mom's) used to say, "if everyone was jumping off a bridge would you"? Everyone has to be their own person.
