Defense so different without Norm

We dont' adjust, we don't blitz at all. When Norm is calling the game we sub like crazy, when he's gone we use base package 95% of the time.

The 4-3 wasn't working, the very rare 3-4 didn't work, why didn't we try nickel?

They weren't going to run down the field, so I think this was horrible.

And that 2nd and 24 that we let them get? That was horrible, we shouldn't have been base D, that was nickel/dime all over it.

Thoughts?

base defense on 2nd and 24? I've seen that called by Norm Parker plenty of times.
also, there have been plenty of teams where Norm didn't sub much. 2004 d-line almost never subbed--which was understandable.

They scored 13 points. With Norm Parker there, I think they score....13 points.

Norm has been carrying this program for along time. The defense without him seems to be missing something.

Thanks for showing us all that you've only witnessed a handful of iowa games. How many TD's did we give up today?

wow.....way to show class, I was giving an opinion and instead of talking about the game you trash me instead....go you.

good point, if the offense has a better day we are saying well played by the D, just frustrating sometimes even though we know what we get with our D

That something that is missing to me is toughness. There was an energy and an attitude with this defense a year ago. It was there last week.
This defense is good, let's not go overboard. But I agree, there is something missing.
*(I also think Angerer is that "something" that is missing LOL)

We NEVER blitz....haven't in 10+ years. It's the way Iowa has built it's defense. I just don't understand why fans complain about our defense in losses (or near losses), but think they're the best when we win.

Disclaimer: I could only listen to the game on the radio. Dolph and Ed pointed out some of the defensive schemes but not all of them.

That said, I look at points and yards allowed and I don't know how much more you can ask for. 13 points, 313 yards, 91 yards rushing, 6-14 on third downs, 1 interception. Indiana's longest play from scrimmage was 21 yards.

If our offense converts even 2 of their 4 trips into the red zone into touchdowns we're not having this conversation.

Agreed. Very scary what this team looks like w/o him given his health will likely end his career soon. I can't believe there's that much of a difference w/o him given that those making calls now have been around him for 10+ years. With that kind of time involved in the system, there shouldn't be such a noticable drop off.

Actually they scored 20 points. The last 7 just didn't make the scoreboard.

Its the situational things. How in the F do you have a wide open receiver in the end zone on 4th and 11 with no blitz on?

Absolutely unforgivable.

"such a noticeable drop off"
I'm not sure I'm seeing this as due to no Norm Parker. I think it's more about missing 3 NFL draft picks off the defense.
