Defense looked faster with an attacking style

This was the fastest the defense looked this year to us in the stands. sometimes it is hard to tell on TV games but the difference from last week to this was amazing. Last week I was yelling about holding the edge and this week they were and they were flying to the ball.

Maybe PSU's offense gives Iowa fits with the running QB from the zone read as that does bother Iowa. Maybe Iowa was playing too much sit back and read the offense last week. The best defenses I have seen against zone read really attack the mesh handoff point.

Last night the hawks were really flowing and attacking while trying to get more penetration. Great to see a couple of run blitzes early in the game.

I am all for keeping this fast reacting, penetrating style. It was amazing to see how Mich's safeties are playing within 7 yards or fewer of the LOS compared to Iowa's but Gair seemed to almost be playing a 4th Lbkr last nite.

What did you think of Gair and Rebumba sp? ?

Iowa's D did look fast. They definitely played with a lot of intensity.

In some ways Michigan is a good matchup for Iowa. Kinda like Wisconsin. They pretty much come right at you at it isn't terribly difficult to prepare for. The problem of course with them is that they are incredibly physical and talented and do throw in a few wrinkles to get 5 the ball. But Iowa showed last night they were up to the task.

I think you made a good point regarding not having to deal with a dual QB like they did against PSU. It allows the defense not to have to worry about one more ball carrier. When PSU's QB had the ball last week Iowa just could never get things under control.

Gair appears faster and great on run support. Plays better angles than Taylor also. Taylor regressed big time this year, IMO, which is a big part of our D struggles

It seems when teams try to run plays horizontally on our d we do a great job stretching the plays out and gang tackling. it seems like when they run quick runs right to the edge is when we get murdered. Its like our de's have hard time setting the edge.

The fundamentals looked better. As people were pointing out last week it seemed that they stopped overthinking and just trusted what they saw and made plays.

Iowa's front looked fast like last year. Having extra players in the box probably allowed them to sell out.

Flying to the ball and tackling, tackling, tackling. Wrapping up the opponents is what has really been missing this year but not last night. Not much in the way of "arm" tackling but actual, real, wrap your opponent and drive through him tackling. And when a mismatch occurred in favor of Michigan our defenders just held on, slowing them down until help arrived. Great effort Hawkeye D!
