Dead Horse

Even though I am as frustrated with the situation as anyone else, I think it’s time to move on and try to be as supportive of the players we do have.

We need to look for the good in what we have. One example is our superior defense that has carried the weight of the entire team on their backs. So hats off to Mr. Parker and his squad. As type that comments a thought popped into my mind “could Kirk be waiting for Parker to retire before he decides to? That’s interesting to think about.

Our special teams have been very consistent also. So a tip of the cap to those coaches and players as well.

Now I realize what looming this Saturday, but that doesn’t take away for the aspects of our program that are far above many successful programs in those areas.

Also the national college football sports media are taking notice of what’s going in Iowa City. So if this snow ball gets too out of control then the national media will be vocalizing enough to exceed our frustrations.

We will see how the rest of the season pans out. We all know that generally Kirk’s teams have improved as the season moves on. I liked to see a major upset on Saturday and a would be happy with an 8-4 season. Honestly at this point 7-5 seems like optimism.

I’ve posted that if we lose the next two then we are in serious trouble. Ohio State appears to be a sure loss (but you never know). To lose to Northwestern would be a major train derailment as they a likely the worst team in the conference. Losing to them could mean 3-9 season. I don’t expect that to happen.

If we at least make a respectable showing at Ohio State and then come back and beat Northwestern, then we still have a shot at 7-5. That’s only one loss more than Kirk’s career average at Iowa.

I know, I know there’s the what ifs out there. What if we had a top fifty offense. Well we would then have a legit shot at the division and playing in the conference title game against Ohio State or Michigan.

However we have beat, scrambled, tenderized, flattened, cooked, that dead horse. As fans we can at least try to appreciate the good play we do get.

At the end of the season we will review the final product and decide where we are at that point. If we sink like a rock to the bottom the heads will need to role. If we somewhat recover and end up 7-5 then you have to give Kirk and family one more year to see where we go. However 3-9 or 4-8 should NEVER be acceptable given the pay scales, facilities, and loyal fan base.

Let’s see how this horse carcass looks at the end of the year. Then decide if we want to tolerate one more season or get the pitch forks and torches out.

This isn’t just about football, but it courses much deeper into ethics, values, and morals. Most Iowans are hard working class people whose life’s are a struggle often times. We all know unethical, immoral, and crooked behavior when we see it.

The remaining portion of this season and what it may lead to may define how people will look upon Kirk and his family.

Hopefully this horse will come out better than what we can see at this point. We have to remember the Kirk is an offensive line specialist. It’s his strongest background and skill set as a coach and former player. I am guessing he is focusing a lot of his energy on this team weakness. Let’s see what he can do.

If there is a coach that can improve this attribute of a football team, he is the guy. When we lost Stoops and people were boo hooing about Bobby this and Booby that I was one who totally stood up for Kirk and said it would be ok and then said “the game is won at the line of scrimmage. Kirk is a scrimmage line guy.

Don’t get me wrong you all know how pissed I have been about this Iowa offense for well over ten years. I am trying to be fair even though these offensive woes have been around a long, long time.

I do expect some venting if we get our asses handed to us on Saturday. Fans vent, that what we do. Let’s HOPE for an unexpected showing. Wow, wouldn’t that be something. Being realistic though I think we got beat up after a bye week last year or the year before that and everyone was upset them. Law of averages say we play a good game on Saturday and win or lose we then go on to roll Northwestern.
