Darn are we in the wrong division - OSU woes.

Tressel knew in April and pulled a Pearl and McNair?

Man, if this is true that division just turned into a complete joke.

I wouldn't go that far. How many big time schools have been busted with recruiting violations or other violations, only to receive a slap on the wrist and end up no worse for the wear. Although I think they deserve more punishment, I'm afraid that will likely happen here. They are too big to throw the book at.

The players who actually broke the rules were treated with kid gloves and allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl. I wouldn't expect to see Tressel catch much of anything for this, especially since it's from an unnamed source.

Your comparison to Pearl brings up a good point, though, which is how much more lenient the NCAA is with football coaches than they are with basketball coaches. It probably has something (everything?) to do with the fact that the BCS and the bowl commissioners are running the show when it comes to football. Reason #5.4 million to switch to a playoff.

Yes, the violation usually is a slap on the wrist. Lying to NCAA investigators on the other hand usually ends up with a nuclear response. If Tressel told NCAA investigators that the first he heard of it was when they were informed in December, but he had been informed in April, that would be a Pearl or McNair situation and OSU would be punished significantly.

The NCAA is completely toothless as an investigative body. However, their are extremely strong when it comes to responding to situations where they determine that schools lied to them.

Tressel would be punished significantly, not the university (except for vacanting 2010 season). The OSU athletic department is meeting now. I imagine a response will be forthcoming soon....

I don't think so. USC lost post-season and scholarships. I expect Tennessee will lose more than what the school did when the final decision comes down.

The lying thing is just the big deal. Now, if there is some way that the NCAA did not actually question Tressel, or the school can come up with some plausible deniability thing that said they didn't ask Tressel if he knew previously, then they might find a way to sneak out of it. But if that is not possible, and it doesn't seem likely, they will get hit.

Of course, this is all going by the assumption that the Yahoo information is correct.

Why not hold the coach to the same standard as the players. Suspend him for 5 games. I would say without pay, but you know the players are still going to get paid during that time, so I guess he can too.

I kind of have a hard time believing Tressel would decide to turn the program in just THREE WEEKS before a BCS bowl game...which is why I have to call BS on this. On the other hand, I was skeptical of the origianl allegations/accusations then OSU goes and admits it.

Amazing how USC gets "delayed" justice, Auburn gets ZERO penalty and Oregon somehow avoids probing in spite of the fact that the Nike-owning alum bankrolls half the program and kids from Texas, Florida and elsewhere decide Eugene is the place to play.

But...we shall see...

You know, I almost like the sleezy dirty guys better than the holier than thou dirty guys like Tressel. From Pryor's many luxury vehicles, to tat gate, this guy has known he is running a semi-pro franchise.

Then to hear the crap he was trying to push in that ridiculous presser. Seriously, how could he say that with a straight face? Can't wait to see those cheaters get hammered. No way the NCAA doesn't bring the hammer now after the whole Sugar Bowl issue.
