Dark day in Iowa football history

After our band was mercilessly and viciously attacked by goons at Iowa State, most reasonable Hawk fans rallied around the band. Those who didn't or who don't believe the band are sometimes left asking "what can we do?"

Well, I want to bring up one of the darkest days of Iowa football history. The day we played Illinois in 1952. Iowa fans attacked the Illini and they cancelled the series for 15 years. That is the right call. If fans can't handle losing to a bitter rival, they need to put the series on hiatus for a few years to let tempers cool off. You take the old army approach, you punish the group for the sins of the few in the hopes things shape up in the future.

Or there was not much of an assault, hence the police that were there didn't make arrests, and you take the modern approach, why fix what isn't broke.? If feelings got hurt, maybe the band needs to take anti-bullying coping class. If there was an assault, they should look at what the police response was.

According to the statement by the AD, a member of the band required medical attention. According to a post by a member of the band, said medical attention was for a broken rib. Seems like it might have been at least a little bit of a problem.

We might have some witnesses on this board:

@ChosenChildren has said, I think, that he's been going to games since before there was a stadium(!).
@thedukeofearl I don't think can quite match that...?

Hope you guys don't mind me mentioning your many years of fandom!

Anybody else I'm forgetting (or whose history I don't know)?

I'm afraid the only logical answer to this band dilemma is, we kick the crap out of the Iowa State band next year in Iowa City. Are you with me? Eye for an eye...it's the only way to get justice anymore.

Or maybe we just don't have the visitor bands travel at all to these games for the next few years both sides. Maybe the right thing to do it just have the home band present and give those visitor tickets to kids in need or something.

Another issue is that we have to play those goons in basketball up there in about ten weeks. And if the players may have moved on from what happened at the end of last year's game, I'm pretty sure the fans haven't. They will boo Connor so loud it will make the floor shake. And if he gets tangled up with players or fans going for a loose ball....?

If this is accurate then I totally agree with the OP. No excuse for fans to act like a bunch of criminals. If true, cancel the series. They need this game far more than Iowa.

We moved to DM in '57. My dad was transferred to Meredith. He moved here a year before the family did to find a house, and see what Iowa was like. He loved it and immediately liked the Hawkeyes. He was from Boston and was a Huge sports fan, Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins. When we arrived I started watching Evy's Hawkeyes and was hooked from that point on.....

My dad got around when he was here. He was friends with Johnny Compiano, owner of Johnny and Kays restaurant and John Rilei who owned the Tavern. They played cards after closing time.....

Leave the band seats empty, as a testimony to stupidity
