Daniel Jeremiah's Best Value Picks for Each Round of NFL Draft

Buffalo used their first pick on him, there are other Hawkeyes there, team is on the rise a bit, not much pressure, chip on shoulder dynamic, not much of a dysfunctional team, fans hungry for one, one playoff win. Lots of good for AJ out of his drop in the draft. Hope he is a star. Puts Buffalo back on the map.

Stone as well.

Nothing better for recruiting than Hawkeyes making an impact in the NFL.

I saw some ESPN deal on that Gandy-Golden kid. Holy smokes what an impressive dude that guy is. I can't see how he fell to the 4th round honestly. 6'4 220ish. Fast as all get out. Does flips, one handed catches with ease. Great hands and just smart as all get out. I have a feeling Jeremiah is right about that kid being a value pick and then some.
Along with all our Hawks of course

As a Hawkeye fan, I don’t take glee that two Iowa players are on that list. Jeremiah seems to be suggesting these players have more talent or skill than where they were taken In the draft. That means their value wasn’t immediately recognized.

Why? Why do NFL talent evaluators not have a higher opinion of Kirk Ferentz’s players?

We’re told Iowa does a great job of developing unheralded players for the next level. If that’s true, that should be apparent when NFL teams are on the clock. No Iowa players should be on this sort of list.

I believe the combine plays a bigger role in undervaluing Iowa potential talent than anti-Kirk thoughts.

Epenesa's numbers at the combine were atrocious and fitting for a fall in the draft.

Stone is limited a bit by size and speed, it seems, dropping him down.

I don't think there is a Kirk bias.

I do think that Iowa players often do "better than advertised" because it is extremely difficult to judge a player's "inner motor" and "drive." Iowa tends to recruit players with big hearts and big motors that also tend to buy into a team game. It is a violent game and letting up on the throttle some of the plays and coasting is very easy. I think Kirk's players are valued for this difficult to determine "heart" in the NFL.

Kirk's player's are perhaps more often undervalued because of Iowa's philosophy of play. It has a focus of team play being more important than individual statistics. Defensive linemen, for example, are coached to stay in their lanes. And we all know that Kirkball is low-risk, avoid turnovers, punt it, win by 3 which also limits statistics which might otherwise place a higher value on draft status.

Two cents...

Depends upon the franchise somewhat.

Historically, Iowa players are actually given increased value by some clubs, such as New England, Green Bay and Minnesota. Buffalo and San Francisco seem to be jumping on the bandwagon as well.

In fact, here's an excerpt from Packers Wire's capsule on AJ before the draft, which obviously caught my eye:

.... "They’d likely need to use pick No. 30 in the first round – that is, if he falls that far in the first place. While he wasn’t flashy at the NFL Scouting Combine (5.04 40-yard dash, 17 bench reps), teams will quickly be reminded by what they saw on tape. It’s worth noting the Packers historically value prospects from Iowa’s program."

If I remember correctly, the new Hawkeye workout center has a wall dedicated to those Hawks who were drafted, made an NFL roster and played in the NFL. Good advertising indeed.

That is not a bad move.

In fairness, I would like to see all the Iowa football players who ended up getting their degrees and in which field. Since a college is about education. That might inspire as well.
