Dan Heiar/Jared Ebert Question

This question is for Jon or anyone else that can answer it. We recruited a 3 star OL from Iowa Western and he signed today. Dan Heiar. I understand the need for depth on the OL and that Heiar is a good OL. What I dont understand is why the Hawks didnt recruit Ebert even though he made it public he wanted to play for the Hawks. From what I can read and watch he seems like a player similar to Klug, and we are losing experience on the DL. So, instead of us signing a 4 star DL we lose him to Oregon. I am sure there is a reason for it, I am just wondering if anyone knows that that reason is? Ebert would have looked good at DT in a Hawk uni next year.

The Iowa coaches don't use a recruiting services star rating to determine if they want a kid. I'm sure Iowa evaluated both kids very thoroughly and may have felt Ebert wouldn't fit into the Iowa system. Time will tell if that was a good choice. Iowa doesn't normally recruit JUCO kids and those they do, usually turn out to be very good players. I will trust the Iowa coaches to determine who they think is a 3star or 4star over any recruiting gurus ratings.

I dont disagree with your sentiment at all regarding the Iowa coaching staff vs a recruiting website. He just seemed like the type of player that would be great in our cov 2 type D. High motor, strong, makes plays. I was just surprised they werent interested. I thought maybe it had to do with having another DT being recruited they were confident we would sign. Thanks for your input.

I was told by one of the coaches that they looked at him and "just didn't see it" in regard to his ability at a DI level. Sometimes I think that the Oregons of the world take kids because it makes them look like they're recruiting "coast to coast", not necessarily because the players actually end up helping them. If they do, then that's a bonus.

I'm going to go with Oregon actually knows what they are doing. i mean they are playing for a National Title. Say what you want about that conference, but it is clear that we would not have won it by any stretch. Also the word going around about us not recruiting him is because he would not be available for spring ball, but the OL would.

This had absolutely nothing at all to do with his ability or Iowa coaches poor evaluation of his skill.

Iowa only wants JUCOs that can enroll at the winter semester break and go through spring practice before there first year.

Ebert wouldn't have been able to enroll until the next fall semester for Iowa, and that apparently wasn't good enough for our coaches. He mentioned in a signing day article that Oregon uses either the quarters or trimester system and he will be enrolling in March so he can go through spring practice there.

Heiar will be enrolling at Iowa in January.

This is 100% correct.

This. Oregon runs on quarters and he'll still be able to do spring practice there. The Iowa coaches felt like if he wasn't going to be on campus until the fall then he'd probably have a hard time finding PT. They seem confident about the younger guys they already have.
