Dan Beebe < Jim Delaney but not powerless

If this is true, that we are playing Mizzou instead of Nebraska, let's look deeper. The Insight has a contract with the Bix XII that extends beyond this year. Last year the Insight insulted Mizzou, choosing Iowa State, a team with a worse record and who Mizzou beat. As a direct result, Mizzou attempted to defect from the Big XII. Nebraska in part cited Mizzou's non-allegience to the Big XII as a reason they came to the Big Ten (although we all know Nebraska salivated at the idea for years). Today the Big Ten office releases a statement formally stating they are not considering any further additions to the conference at this time, and we learn that the deal has been in the works today for Mizzou to play Iowa, rather than the defecting Nebraska. Puzzle coming together. Beebe and Delaney have been talking this weekend.

The B10 announcement today was peculiar all by itself but the timing is even more......

Maybe a deal was cut but, what would be in it for the B10?

I cannot say I have proof that Delaney and Beebe have been talking, but the backstory to why the Insight chose Mizzou is clear. Dan Beebe was going to do everything he could to make sure Mizzou got the Insight, and that defecting Nebraska got passed over. He put pressure on the Insight. The Insight has to think about its long term relationship with the Big XII, not just the money this year. The Big Ten and Big XII more assuredly would have been speaking about which teams they were going to have matched up against each other, and its possible that when the Big Ten office found out they were going to end up with a less attractive television matchup with Mizzou (and probably less money as a result), and realizing the only reason for that could be an unhappy Beebe, they tendered the public statement which can only help to solify the Big XII. Alot of politics. Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist, but too much happened today between the Big XII and Big Ten to not wonder if there is a connection.

sooo the Big Ten made the statement so Beebe would leave NU in the insight bowl....but Beebe did it anyways? is your claim?

it is curious isn't it. But, what would have been in it for Delaney to agree to that announcement... what would he get in exchange?

You are not far off on any of this..........I'm not a playoff guy, but this type garbage makes me want to say screw it, let's just have a playoff.

None of this makes any sense.

I'm sure Beebe was screwing Nebreska, but Jim Delaney could give two $hits about this 3rd tier bowl game.

You are correct that Beebe pushed hard for Missouri to the Insight but you are making it way too complicated. The leverage point the Big 12 has is not with the Insight Bowl, it is with the Fiesta Bowl, which is run by the same committee that runs the Insight Bowl. The Fiesta Bowl does not want to lose its Big 12 tie-in to the Cotton Bowl and was very accomodating to the Big 12. If the Insight Bowl had a stand-alone relationshp with the Big 12, the Big 12 would not have that leverage.

Delaney had nothing to do with it. Delaney always looks out for the Big Ten's interest and would have loved to see Nebraska go to the Insight but was not going to waste any capital on the Insight's selection.

The Big XII and the Big Ten were not able to agree about the matchup. Yes, ultimately it is decided by the Insight, but the two conferences playing in the game have influence over the bowl. I agree the other bowl games are alot higher on Delaney's card, but significant money, on top of the standard payout, was still at play in this one. No question the Big Ten office, not just us Iowa fans, wanted the Neb v. Iowa matchup. We didn't get it because Beebe wanted to make Mizzou happy after they were passed up in this same bowl last year and it (and similar issues with the Big XII preceding it) almost cost him his job. Big Ten does not gain much by releasing the statement it did today, immediately, but I think it is probably a good faith gesture toward the Big XII going forward, after they were not able to reach a meeting of the minds this weekend. The Big Ten was probably done with expansion anyway. I know I'm speculating, but I don't think this is nonsensical. What other explanation explains Mizzou being chosen over Nebraska, and can the press release really be a coincidence?

I don't understand why the B10 would make the announcement they made today....today? The announcement came out of the blue late on a Sunday for know logical reason.

Very odd... probably strange coincidence but odd none the less

I agree that I may be overcomplicating it. I can't get past the timing of it all.

Disagree. It *is* nonsensical.

The B10 made the announcement this afternoon knowing the the story of the day would be the bowl matchups. It's called "throwing a story out with the trash" - you announce something when you know more significant news will overshadow it immediately. They didn't want any attention paid to it.

What it really means is that the likes of Rutgers, Pitt, Missouri, ACC schools are of no interest to the B10. If they could get ND or Texas they would certainly be interested. Short of that, they are done shopping.
