Thinking ahead to next years team, Jones has another year with us right? I know he is a now injured juco, but he had two years avail with us I thought. Do you think he will be fully recovered?

We lose a ton next year. Jones will really be needed. Jok, Uhl, Jones, Wagner, Ellingson, isn't too bad for a start...

He will have at least one more year (possibly two if they grant him a medical redshirt, which normally would be a given but this would be a 6th year because he already took one in JUCO). If he had stayed healthy, I think he would have had a great shot at starting next year with the experience he would have gained this year. I still think he'll be an important contributor next year, but who knows what Fran is going to do next year with his lineups.

The last few years we have had quality senior classes that played a ton of minutes. (Marble, McCabe, Basabe), (White, Olesani, Ogelsby), (Woodbury, Uthoff, Clemmons, Gessel). Next year it will just be Jok (and Dale Jones if he doesn't get a sixth year). We are mostly likely going to be pretty bad next year.

We miss Jones already. He would have been a quality bench player this year, with possible starts. We could have used him in the 2nd half vs ISU, when nobody decided to do anything. He will be missed. Hoping for a quick and full recovery.

Does anyone know how he is doing so far? I do not know if the initial response to surgery is a good indicator of future progression, but if he is doing well, that is a good sign.

I do not think we will be pretty bad next year. Jok, Jones, Uhl, Wagner, Baer, Ellingson, Fleming, Williams will all have playing experience. Hutton and Moss will be trained,conditioned, seasoned and focused on being ready to go. They will know their strengths and weaknesses, and have improved those areas. Cook will play some minutes. Jordan too. Hopefully Pemsl and Kriener are ready to contribute.
Next year will be an athletic bunch. Probably the most athletic of all of Fran's teams in his career. How well they play together, and how unselfish they play, and assertive when need be, will be the factors.
Our wings will be good. I expect positions 2,3 and 4 to be very solid. The remainder of the post and PG do leave some question marks. But our athleticism and ball handling skills be adequate to do the job

Disagree. Look at Wisconsin this year. You can't lose 80% of your scoring and bounce back with nearly all So and Fr. Sure you could if you recruit like Kentucky, but we don't. Next year is going to be a big time struggle.

I agree that most of the time you can't. But Fran has been slowly upgrading talent every year and Woody and Gesell haven't developed quite as much as expected. That means guys like Cook and Bohannon might not be a huge drop off from Woody and Gesell. In the past, guys like Hutton and Moss would have to be major contributors this year. Now they're red shirting.

We lose 4 huge contributors but 3 of them are pretty replaceable. Uthoff is the only one that's not but it will be the 3rd year in a row we've had to replace the best player so it's not uncommon. I'm not saying there won't be a drop off because I think there definitely will be. That drop off has a chance to be ballanced out with an easier schedule and better record in close games though.

I honestly think our returning talent next year is going to be better than Wisconsin's this year. Wisconsin is all about the system...style of play. Our style of play is an easier transition IMO...pun intended.

We will miss all 4 of these guys on the defensive end IMO. I think the drop off will be less noticeable on offense but defense is another story. We will also miss the intangibles that go along with playing 3 years together...4 for Gesell, Woodbury and Clemmons.

My post wasn't intended to bash our players now. I know there are things that we will miss about them. I just think they're replaceable. For instance, Bohannon is a great shooter. If he can make a couple 3's a game it will extend the defense and a guy like Cook might have more room to score down low. If a guy can be an upgrade in one aspect of the game, it can really help make up for the other parts he's a downgrade in.

I agree with this unfortunately. Our PG situation next year terrifies me

I understand. We're on the same page.

Yes- will it be redshirt freshman Williams? Fleming seems more like an off guard to me but do you put him at point? Is there even anyone else?

I'm guessing Bohannon and Williams. Gesell and Clemmons both started as a true freshmen at PG. And Fran has started a lot of other true freshmen during his time at Iowa.

I believe Cook will be a day 1 starter at the 5 next season.

I agree we could be pretty good next season, but we won't have the level of starting experience that we had coming into this season.

Next year's team is going to look a lot like the team that went to the NIT finals.

Gatens= Jok
Woody= Cook
White= Uhl
Gesell= Bohannon
Besabe = Jones
Marble= Williams
McCabe= Baer

Remember I'm comparing the players to where they were at that point in their careers. I think next year's bench will be better than Gatens team's bench. If we can sneak into the tournament next year, we might have a really long run of making it.

Gatens didn't make the NIT Finals. If you're talking about the 2012-13 that made it to the finals than comparing Williams and Bohannon to Marble and Gesell is unrealistic. Marble averaged 15 ppg that year and Gesell was at 8.7

Duh I forgot May's senior year.
