Cubs possibly moving to the Cell in 2013?

Cubs Deny Possible 2013 Move to U.S. Cellular | NBC Chicago

Cubs brass is denying it but apparently employees at Us Cellular Field have been told their workload is going to double in 2013. I love Wrigley Field but it's about time they gave it a proper renovation. Given some time I think the Cubs could make Wrigley a modern installation that still preserves the old time feel.

Someone asked this question to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago today during his chat. He said that if they were to play away from Wrigley for a full season that the games would possibly be split between the Cell and Miller Park. Reason was that no field is able to handle the workload of 162 games in about 180 calender days. Or they could lengthen the renovations for 3-4 years and have the Cubs continue to play at Wrigley during the renovations.

Give me option #2 all day.

Personally I say screw it, close Wrigley down for a year, play all the games elsewhere, and get the project done. Wrigleyville is a cramped mess anyway. It would be better to just get it all done without all the fans around then it would be to keep it open and have to deal with all the construction equipment clogging Wrigleyville down.

I find it hard to believe they will shut down wrigley for a season. a lot of wriglryville businesses would be screwed. they depend on game day traffic to pay six figure monthly leases. that's a lot of scratch at stake in a city renowned for political corruption.

That's a really good point, Duff. I hadn't thought about that. Probably the main detail that they're still trying to work out.

And I bet none of the leases have any thing in them about this situation.

The fact of the matter is that the best move is just to move for a year, like the Bears did and get it over with.

True. An unfortunate side effect of having Wrigley Field smack dab in the middle of a business/residential district that I'm assuming would be addressed in some fashion before everything is said and done.

Addressed by what? You think the govt is going to kick money to business owners for lost income? You think the landlords are going to lower rent for a year just cause Wrigley ain't open? You think insurance is going to cover that?

They need to knock down just about everything but the brick wall with the ivy on it and start over. Wrigley is deteriorating almost to the point of no repair.

Whoa there Duff, chill.

No, what I am saying is that I'm sure the needs of the Wrigleyville businesses are also one facet in the decision making model that the Rickett's are going to have to address, in one way or another. I'm not saying a reasonable compromise is going to be reached.

This why they are not even trying to field a competitive team for the next 2 years? I think 2013 is the final year they have to pay Soriano. So perhaps they are building the team for a big year when they reopen Wrigley in 2014.

Wrigley is a frickin garbage dump; almost as bad as that place up in Evanston. A new stadium still won't help them win though.

nope 3 more years. through 2014

Oops, you are right. But as of now the Cubs only have 32 million committed for 2013. Dempsters salary comes off the books. If they are going to have to play their games away from Wrigley for an entire season then they are going to want to keep the payroll low.

thred title nearly gave me a heart attack thought it was indicating a perminate move. temporary move while Wrigley is renovated, I'm fine with.

Hopefully a heart attack out of excitement. The Cell is a much nicer park, is easier to get in and out of(and no, not just because it's usually half empty), and has much better food. Cubs fans would end up enjoying their experience at the Cell.

I'll concede that there aren't nearly as many bars around the park to do your "pregaming", but tailgating is great and the new Bacardi at the Park(yes, I hate the name too) bar/restaurant is really nice.

Now I know the comeback will be the location of the ballpark. Truth be told, I've been to hundreds of White Sox games and have never had a single issue with the neighborhood. There's far too much made of that.

And I'm not blindly bashing the Cubs. I'm actually quite jealous that they now have a real GM with a clear vision. I think the Cubs are in great hands and will break their long World Series drought under Theo.

Unfortunately my team has a GM that can't decide if he wants to rebuild or try to compete, so we as White Sox fans are looking at a disaster of a team and as it stands currently, an ugly future.
