Crap facilities?

Where does the idea that Iowa has crap facilities originate? It is not true.

Very few Big Ten schools have practice facilities and most arenas are more than ten years older than CHA. Most schools are behind Iowa in the development & construction of their practice facilities.

Research "Michigan basketball practice facility" etc. Hell, even that great basketball school Indiana renovated and improved its football facilities before it started construction on its basketball practice facility. In 2007, the Indiana Board of Trustees voted to demolish and replace Assembly Hall. However, they don't have the money to do it.

Tubby is concerned because Minnesota has no plans for a practice facility. Iowa's basketball facilities are as good as or better than most of the other programs in the Big Ten.

my question is are we building something thats going to last or is what we building going to be back at the bottom of the conference in 10 years or so

Best money can buy, just like the head coach search.

Maybe hiring McCaffery will save money to put into facilities, then the next time we look for a coach, probably soon, Oregon won't take them all away. Maybe.

Does anybody remember the wonderful facility that Lute Olson had when he was our coach? I loved the old fieldhouse but as a 'facility' it was a dump. Somehow he seemed to recruit talent that could compete for B10 titles in the glory days of B10 basketball. We built CHA and it has been downhill ever since.

I've found it really hard to find a full sq. footage assessment of the CHA practice facilities, but what is KNOWN is that the Strength/Conditioning area is ~11,000sq feet. From the schematics:

You can see that this total place is easily 60,000+ sq feet. Two full courts, the above mentioned Strength/Conditioning and Iowa is sparing no expense given a total cost double that of Michigan's proposed practice center (article Jan, 2009):

And the CHA project seems to be in line with the expectations of a "Power Basketball" school such as Indiana (article Feb 2010):

Iowa's facilities, IMO, seem to be very much in line with current building trends, if not better.

When Lute came in here the times and expectations were different.

I think times were different and to be honest I think it was harder then. The state of Iowa developed very few D1 players in those days. The proliferation of AAU basketball has given Iowa kids far more opportunities to develop their skills against national level competition.

As far as expectations Iowa was only a few years removed from a B10 title when Olson took the job and within a few years he delivered his own(in a tie with the eventual NCCA Champs). Now people hope that we can return to the slightly better than mediocre days of Mr. Davis.

With the right coach there is no reason we should not be able to be competitive.
