Since you were the author of this article, I am looking for a little clarity on Connor's last statement about Pat Mac. What was the context of the quote " He hasn’t committed yet but hopefully he figures out what he wants to do at some point and ends up here"? Do you have any insight on this topic? I had never considered Patrick not coming to Iowa. He has just seemed like a part of the Hawkeye sports family since his bout with cancer. I assumed all along that when the time came he would hit the court in black and gold. Is this really something that might not happen?

Two sport athletes aren't very common at that level. Usually only elite athletes. His dad being one of the coach's makes this more plausible. What is his major? One of my son's played a college sport while in engineering. Only one of 2 that ever did that and graduated. His adviser after a concussion asked him point blank...do you want to be a player or and engineer. Today he's an engineer and yes I'll brag, from a top engineering school. And that was only one sport and not his entire collegiate career. Will be interesting. The time commitment in a college sport is astronomical. My guess is that Conner has high aspirations career wise. My guess is he'll limit to one.

One of my other kids was on a flight with said athlete and father. They have typical father son issues in communication. How many of us could coach our own kid....

Even before I got halfway through the article I was thinking by his Junior year he will only be playing one sport.

He says if he is doing much better in one sport compared to the other sport then he will focus on the other sport. That's exactly what I expect to happen. If I had to guess which one he chooses I would say "baseball".

However if Fran starts to kick butt and really gets the program rocking then I would say he decides to be apart of the ride and chooses basketball.

It's really just a formality with PM committing to Iowa, IMO. He's told me he can't see himself going anywhere else. He just hasn't formally committed so I think Connor is trying to prevent stealing his thunder, so to speak. I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Connor's major is Business. He was admitted to Tippie.

Maybe I missed it in there but is there any reason that CM cannot go on the overseas trip with the baseball team? Maybe freshman or walkons can't?

He's Rivals #116 recruit in basketball. I'm guessing they don't have a similar ranking system in baseball but from what I've heard, he's been good not great in baseball? Seems more likely he'd excel in basketball but that's just my opinion.

If that is true then I would tend to agree. I've actually heard he is very talented in baseball as well. I am hoping he goes the basketball route and becomes an all conference type of player.

said this in the other thread, but baseball games start in february, basketball season ends in March. To play both sports at Iowa, Connor would either have to leave the basketball team a month before the postseason, or else skip the first 2 months of the 4 month baseball season.

I just don't see it lasting.

I'm much more of a college basketball fan than college baseball so I would prefer a situation where basketball works out well for him. With that said, I'm not overly excited about Connor's basketball potential. I have trouble seeing him fitting as a PG and I have trouble seeing him being a dynamic scorer as a wing.

It sounds like his first love is baseball and there is nothing wrong with that. I doubt he will be much of a factor for the basketball team in his career. I'm sure he is pretty talented in basketball, but I don't thik he is that talented. Iowa can recruit guys for basketball that are just as talented that have there hearts in the game.

First of all congrats to him to be good enough to make a go at this. Most kids these days have to specialize in one sport at the high school level to make it.

Even when this gets written out on paper it just doesn't really add up. Iowa's basketball season ended on March 19th this year, at that point Iowa baseball had played 15+ games. Hard to jump into the swing of things right away so he would be costing himself a good portion of the baseball season. Not to mention missing a good portion of fall/winter baseball workouts.

Again, I don't see where he cracks the rotation on the basketball team in '18-'19. Uhl graduates and Weiskamp comes in. Unless someone transfers I don't see many minutes there.

Will it be worth it for him to ride the pine/ play sparingly on the basketball team while costing himself a good portion of his baseball season? Maybe.

My guess is that either by his second year or third he focuses in on baseball.

Pure speculation on my part but just how I see it.

I believe you're right. I've said this in other threads: Everything I've heard is that baseball is his sport of choice. The fact that he delayed informing everyone of his decision says a lot. I believe he wants to concentrate on baseball but is afraid to let dad down.

To say he is not that talented is a bit much, however. He was/is a Top 100 talent per some some scouting services and those that don't have him in the Top 100 have him fairly close. Most of them have him listed as a 4 star prospect. To me, that means pretty talented.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

I think it's because it's a USA baseball event. The basketball team is playing exhibitions.

A key thing to remember here is that Connor will be a walk-on for at least his first two years on campus. It doesn't cost the basketball or baseball teams anything in terms of a scholarship. He's not preventing those programs from giving scholarships to other kids. He's not costing other prospects opportunities.

Of course, Connor is walking on this year, but it's a new revelation if he's walking on definitely for 2 years. The numbers indicate that might be the case, but has this been stated by the McCafferys?

Interesting quotes at the end of the article regarding Connor's 2-sport plan:
"Unless it comes to a point where I'm having a lot of success in one sport and not the other, I want to keep doing it. I definitely want to do it for the first two years."
To me it sounds like he's checking to make sure he's not a pro baseball player before joining the family business.

McCaffery comes to Iowa as a walk-on for basketball and baseball after originally accepting a scholarship offer from his father when he committed as a freshman. As of now, there won’t be a scholarship available in ’18, either. Dom Uhl is the only senior and his ride is marked for Muscatine’s Joe Wieskamp.

The Hawkeyes are projected to have four available scholarships in ’19. One is expected to go to Connor’s younger brother, Patrick McCaffery.

“Honestly, I’m not worried about it. I will probably think about it more once I actually get there. I applied for a few academic scholarships that hopefully come through. Other than that, my family is paying,” Connor said.

I think the guy is pretty talented, but I meant he isn't talented enough to be a great factor if he is playing two sports. If a guy is ranked 90 in the country that is pretty talented, but they are not likely to make the NBA. There are guys that are underrated, but it is pretty tough to be successful being a two sport athlete. Iowa can recruit other guys that are talented enough to take his place if he wants to play baseball.
