Iowa coach Fran McCaffery reached out to some of his colleagues for advice about coaching his son. He spoke with Creighton’s Greg McDermott, Michigan’s John Beilein and Craig Neal, the former head coach at New Mexico and assistant with the Hawkeyes.

As much as he enjoyed hearing their thoughts, McCaffery ultimately is learning through experience. Connor McCaffery is redshirting his first season on campus.

“It’s easy. Because like everybody else, if I need to say something to him, I say it,” Fran said.

McDermott offered to relieve him of the responsibility. He coached his son, Doug McDermott, to an all-American career.

“He said you should send both (Connor) and (’19) Patrick (McCaffery) to play for me because he’s proven I’m the best at it, so can’t argue with that,” Fran joked.
