concerned about the run defense today

Not sure if it was a mental letdown but after the hawk Dee shut down the mean green in the first qtr I thought the run defense looked like it had some trouble.

Some of it was scheme but some of it looked like Bazata was having issues getting off blocks.

N Texas had a lot of plays with 3 receivers right which would pull two lbkrs that way and then run to their left side over guard or the shifty running back would break it outside.

The hawks had trouble stopping this and I heard Iowa game up 180yards rushing .

Hope they can fix this quick because B1G teams will take advantage of it.

It's hard to give 100% effort when you are in a game like that. Especially after the way the 1st quarter went down. Hopefully that's all it was.

hoping it was just that, a mental lapse by the whole team. Still, regardless of how bad the team across from you is and what the score is you have to beat your guy and remember what your job is. It's embarrassing to give up more rushing yardage in one game than you have the entire rest of the season to this point. Hopefully Ott will be back for the wisconsin game

I thought about that too. However I think it was more that the Iowa defense was giving them the short passes and run plays after they had a big lead. Throughout much of the first half they could not run the ball well. After Iowa got the big lead they seemed content to allow the plays, but once the field began to shrink they were stopped and had to settle for field goals as the defensive backs were closer to the LOS then. Iowa just did not want to give up big plays with a 3 plus possession lead. On top of that Iowa did put in more back ups in sooner on the D-line than at other positions. I am still confident in Iowa's run defense.

Um, I think a talented team with some speed at running back could do some damage with outside runs and short passes. The Northwestern playbook is what I am worried about. If their line can get any kind of blocking going they could control the ball and drive the Hawks nuts.

Way too much time to pass the ball, no pass rush from the front four. That and at least 3 dropped TD passes from the Mean Green receivers. I thought the run defense was good, but if you give a Big 10 QB that much time they will pick you apart. Parker eventually had to go to blitzing to put pressure on the QB and I think that led to running opportunities for N. Texas.

Also, the second-team defensive line got rotated into the game on North Texas' fourth possession, and the Hawkeyes dispatched reserves almost exclusively in the fourth quarter.

More concerned about the pass defense. This game & Pitt game - no pass rush and soft coverage.

I didn't think our pass rush was terrible yesterday but don't really look much into it because of the competition

I'm holding onto some hope that another week of recovery time will allow Drew Ott to get healthier. He was a monster the first week.

Ott showed some good pressure and burst with that caused fumble.

As someone else said, I like it when we mix in a blitz now and then, and maybe not bad to blitz occasionally on 1st down, more of a run blitz, to try and get TFL.

Right on track... exposed our edges again. A team with more talent than North Texas utilizing fast backs (think David Johnson of Northern Iowa last year) would get by our linebackers and score. At least for yesterday the outside running was not shut down by Iowa.
