What scares you most about Saturday? Matchup wise.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:02 Robbymac
12:02

JonDMiller:
Mistakes. Iowa making mistakes. that is what scares me most the rest of the year, because I think if Iowa loses, it will be because they beat themselves because they are better than any team left on their schedule

[Comment From RyanRyan: ]
What do you think the chances are for a slip-up at Kinnick the rest of the season? The Hawks haven't had great success against Northwestern and Indiana in recent years.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:02 Ryan
12:03

JonDMiller:
I just don't see it. Not with this team, and not with what is at stake.

[Comment From MasonMason: ]
Jon, what percentage would you place the likelihood the Illinois tight end will de-commit from Illinois and sign with the Hawks?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:03 Mason
12:03

JonDMiller:
I will say 95% he decommits from Illinois...then after that, I put Iowa's chances no worse than 60%
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:03 JonDMiller
12:04

JonDMiller:
Had the Illini coaches not called him and put the guilt trip on him two weeks ago, he would have been at the Iowa-Michigan game, and then at the Wisconsin-Iowa game

[Comment From DuffmanDuffman: ]
What are the odds we get both clayborn and spivey back next year?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:04 Duffman
12:05

JonDMiller:
25%? I think Spievey will hear from the scouts that he will be no worse than a 3rd round pick...if he goes in the 2nd round, that is a million dollars in signing money....Greene was the first pick of the second round, and Fletcher was the 2nd, and they each got arond 900,000. I dont think Clayborn goes

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
I know you are no mind reader, but how do you think the players are treating the current rankings and attention?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:05 Guest
12:06

JonDMiller:
I think this team is a reflection of their head coach. Some years, that got away from them, like in 2006. But they have righted that ship, and Kirk is not thikning about it. He is not naive and they have talked some about BCS rankings and that, but in the vein of you have not done anything yet. All you have done is introduced yourself to the conversation. If you want to stay in it, you had better focus on the next game or you will be forgotten.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:06 JonDMiller
12:06

[Comment From ShadasRevengeShadasRevenge: ]
That was a pretty shady move on the Zookers part, considering he's poached recruits before.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:06 ShadasRevenge
12:06

JonDMiller:
If you know how to poach, then you know all the rules...and you know all the tricks

[Comment From JordanJordan: ]
Why was O'Keefe so eager to get out of the first half last week? There was plenty of time and we chose to go 3 and out. Then we get the ball back and do nothing. It was embarrassing.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:06 Jordan
12:07

JonDMiller:
That is Kirk. And that has been Iowa football for the Ferentz era. If you break a play, and you get some yards, then you change your approach, which they did. But Kirk feels real good about his defense in most years, and he goes with it and does not put them in tough spots.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:07 JonDMiller
12:07

[Comment From ShadasRevengeShadasRevenge: ]
Jon, in your opinion is that the most important game the Hawks have played in your time covering the team?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:07 ShadasRevenge
12:08

JonDMiller:
I am guessing you mean last week...its tough to say...the win at Michigan in 2002 was a huge statement for this program...just huge. 34-9 at Michigan, a team that finished in the Top 10...that was a 'WE'RE BACK!' moment there. Last week was big, tihs week is bigger
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:08 JonDMiller
12:08

[Comment From JerryJerry: ]
I've been impressed by the Dolphins and their Wildcat power rushing game. Why couldn't Iowa go double-TE and run it? especially if we're havongtrouble moving the ball ala Wisky
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:08 Jerry
12:08

JonDMiller:
You invite the loaded box there...I just don't see a need for it. I'd like to see more runs out of four wides.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:08 JonDMiller
12:09

[Comment From MasonMason: ]
I saw on your site the piece about the punter/kicker from Australia. His video was amazing to watch. How did the Iowa staff learn about him and where does he go to school now? The kid looks amazing what he can do with the ball. Do you think he would kick and punt?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:09 Mason
12:09

JonDMiller:
He was a foreign exchange student in either Ottumwa or Osky...can't recall...and I tihnk the HS coaches helped keep tabs on him. I believe Blair at HR wrote about that relationship. He does look good. As far as kicking and punting...not sure. Iowa has not gone down that road too many times under KF
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:09 JonDMiller
12:10

JonDMiller:
I think if you have a great punter, you let him punt...but this is a big kid...so perhaps he has the leg stamina to do both

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
What do you think about the 5 wide look? DO you think we will see more of that as the year goes on?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:10 Guest
12:10

JonDMiller:
I think they will keep sprinkling it in...it won't be something they do for a entire drive..then again, watch them do it this week
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:10 JonDMiller
12:10

[Comment From BrianBrian: ]
Any particular reason for Kirk's struggles at east Lansing? I've never seen it as a really hard place to play in terms of crowd.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:10 Brian
12:12

JonDMiller:
The first trip, it was men against boys. That was nearly a 50-point game by halftime...in 2001, I tihnk that was 31-28...Iowa scored a late TD to make it look closer...in 2003, it was real windy and one of the few times kirk defered with coin toss...I think Iowa fumbled a PR early in that one...mistakes did them in...2008, two turnovers in the redzone and a missed blocking assignment on 4th&1 late...a lot of Iowa beating itself.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:12 JonDMiller
12:12

[Comment From dhowdhow: ]
CBS listed Dace as a Midseason 1st-team All-American. Any chance he gets another year? Or because of his success, his stock probably won't be any higher and he might just enter the draft?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:12 dhow
12:12

JonDMiller:
Yes, I think there is a chance...and I tihnk there is a chance the NFL will want to see him play another year on that knee...he would likely be a risky pick...more of an undrafted FA
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:12 JonDMiller
12:12

[Comment From DuffmanDuffman: ]
As good as this team is I think the reality is we are one year away agree?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:12 Duffman
12:13

JonDMiller:
As of now, I think last year's team was better, in November, than this team is now. I think that next year's team can be really, really good too...but when you are 7-0, its all about now
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:13 JonDMiller
12:13

[Comment From CodyCody: ]
With MSU probably throwing the ball more do you think we need interceptions to win?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:13 Cody
12:13

JonDMiller:
It won't hurt...and they have turned it over like 12 times in the last five games...they are #17 in the nation in passing yards, #90 in rushing
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:13 JonDMiller
12:13

[Comment From forty5forty5: ]
Whats word on Brinson? we going to see him on the field at all this year?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:13 forty5

[Comment From justsomehawkfanjustsomehawkfan: ]
I've heard MSU's secondary is soft. Are we possibly looking at a big day for TonyMo and the receivers?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:14 justsomehawkfan
12:14

JonDMiller:
They are soft, and they try to make up for it with an aggressive pash rush. The OL is going to need to be on point this week. If they are, Iowa could have a big day through the air
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:14 JonDMiller
12:14

[Comment From RobbymacRobbymac: ]
Just out of curiousity I've heard you say both 2002 and 2008 would beat this team. How about the other two in the argument for Kirk's best teams? 2003 and 2004? How does this team stack up with those two?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:14 Robbymac
12:15

JonDMiller:
2004 Iowa defense is the best in the Kirk era...IMO...this team on the whole is gettin closer to that team...I think this team is better than the 2003 team.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:15 JonDMiller

[Comment From jhawkijhawki: ]
Is Cousins running well now on his gimpy ankle? Can Iowa assume he will not escape the pocket and hurt them?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:15 jhawki
12:15

JonDMiller:
Cousins is more of their thrower
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:15 JonDMiller
12:15

[Comment From JerryJerry: ]
They're already loading the box, the wildcat end around makes the OLB stay home, opening up the inside. People don't understand the Wildcat is power football, which we do - but not as effectively this year
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:15 Jerry
12:16

JonDMiller:
I just don't know that we will see them do it. But they do have a package called 'Wild Hawk'

[Comment From AJ```AJ```: ]
Is it possible that someone could ask the coaching staff why they don't give flu shots sometime in August?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:16 AJ```
12:16

JonDMiller:
Because flu shots aren't usually available until later

#1 Wisconsin, #2 PSU, #3 MSU

[Comment From Jo MamaJo Mama: ]
Of the 3 remaining home games, which one should cause me the most sleepless nights? Am I the only one not sleeping these days?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:17 Jo Mama
12:17

JonDMiller:
I am not sleeping either, but its not because of the football team :) I think NW, because of the recent history
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:17 JonDMiller
12:17

[Comment From ShadasRevengeShadasRevenge: ]
In five wide, the option are almost limitless as far as playcalling goes, the defense can't commit either way.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:17 ShadasRevenge
12:17

JonDMiller:
You can't run out of that, there is an option you don't have which is why you won't see it a lot...unless you have a running QB
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:17 JonDMiller
12:17

[Comment From JerryJerry: ]
E. lansing and Spartan stadium are both dumps. Not only do you have to win a game, you just try and get out with all your rims and your life
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:17 Jerry

[Comment From TaytTayt: ]
The punter was a foreign exchange student in Ottumwa. Every bit of 6'4'' too.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:17 Tayt
12:18

[Comment From TaytTayt: ]
Next year, with the RB situation, could you see Wegher moving to more of a slot receiver?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:18 Tayt
12:18

JonDMiller:
I could see him being used in that role, yes. As well as some carries. if Hampton comes back 100%, this team is going to be loaded back there
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:18 JonDMiller
12:18

[Comment From nathannathan: ]
who do you see as having the greatest potential for a breakout performance this week? (either side of the ball)
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:18 nathan
12:18

JonDMiller:
I think it will be important to get Moeaki going early underneath, to slow down their backers. Also DJK.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:18 JonDMiller
12:19

[Comment From MasonMason: ]
Jon, not to bypass this season because trust me, these seasons don't come along too often. But, as a die-hard Hawk fan, when you look at the roster and the players we have returning next season, along with a much more favorable schedule, shouldn't that make Hawk fans salivate?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:19 Mason
12:19

JonDMiller:
It's exciting...but remind yourself that Iowa has also won three games by a combined 6 points this year, too
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:19 JonDMiller

The teams that Michigan State has beaten this year have a record of 10-10. The opponents that they have lost to are 15 -4. I don't see why they are receiving so much praise. Their last two games against Northwestern and Illinois have been cupcakes.

How far away is the o-line from being the line we thought they would be at the start of the season?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:19 Blaine
12:20

JonDMiller:
Well, I never thought they would be hitting on all cylinders in September, because only one Ferentz line has done that...but I felt they would be ahead of where they are now...I think that next week, things start to look a lot better, and that has to do with the MSU D

Where does OSU Rank in that? #1 or is Wisconsin better?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:20 Guest

Thursday October 22, 2009 12:21 Jason

VERY SOON...we are teaming up with a group that has been doing bowl charters for decades, so we can offer more departure cities...DSM, CR and Moline...its an organization you know quite well :)

[Comment From RobbymacRobbymac: ]
If given the choice of playing USC or Oregon in the Rose Bowl which would you prefer? USC for the chance at a program defining victory, or Oregon which we likely have a much better chance of actually beating?
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:21 Robbymac
12:22

JonDMiller:
USC..because of their offensive system is more power based, more pro style...and Costa scares me a bit for Oregon.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:22 JonDMiller
12:22

[Comment From DuffmanDuffman: ]
Do you think we could be using Wegher better? I think we would be better suited with him in a TD/Ronnie Harmon 3rd down back type roll. He would see about as many snaps and he seems to thrive when getting the ball in space.
Thursday October 22, 2009 12:22 Duffman
12:22

JonDMiller:
Kirk said that Brandon ran into several dead plays last week...meaning, things were blown up beore he got to the LOS....after watching the game again, you could see that.

That is the beauty of having Tony in the game. Teams have to plan specifically for him. When they do that, they leave other options open. Even if Tony doesn't have a catch, he has a huge impact by being on the field

They do that when they feel they have a quickness advantage against the guards...Iowa did that against MSU at home in 2002 and they tore up the spartans. I love norm!

I've been a pessimist most of the year, but I really think Iowa is going to make a major national statement in this game and put it to sparty something like 38-13.

How does your bowl charter work with respect to flexibility on the bowl decision? Changing destinations and/or refunds?

We reserve spots, and have trips and properties reserved for all locations. and if you want a refund if they dont go to a bowl you want to go to, you get one with nothing lost.

I guarantee MSU will come out firing and that Cousins and Co. will lead two or three spirited drives through the air. Do you think Kirk F. and staff will be ready for it? Cuz I guarantee MSU won't be running much in the first half with their RBs.

Of course they will be ready, but both teams are trying to execute. MSU dropped a lot of balls last year...cant count on that every time out. Iowa really needs a consistent pass rush this week

Now, I'm in a bit of a quandry this weekend. I can't remember the last time that we had so many night games in a season and it can cause issues for me in deciding how to tell people that I can't go to their party because the Hawks are playing. How should I tell people this weekend why I can't meet wup with them?

To go along the lines of what Jerry was talking about ... if MSU tries to bracket away Moeaki ... any vibe that that will really open things up for a WR to really step up? Maybe we should expect a big game from Stross and/or McNutt.

I'm encouraged by the fact that Cousins doesn't run much and that our D line will be able to put on a pass rush rather than maintain rush lanes like they must with mobile QBs- think we see alot of Clayborn and Binns in the backfield Sat?
