Over the last eight years, the Iowa Hawkeyes football program has experienced both successes and challenges. Let's compare and contrast their performance with other notable programs during this period.
Successes:
  1. Consistent Bowl Appearances: The Hawkeyes have been consistent in qualifying for bowl games over the last eight years, showcasing their program's stability and competitiveness.
  2. Strong Defensive Tradition: Iowa has maintained a reputation for fielding solid defensive units. Their disciplined and fundamentally sound approach has resulted in one of the top-ranked defenses in the nation on multiple occasions.
  3. Development of NFL Talent: The Hawkeyes have produced several NFL-caliber players over the years. Their ability to develop talent and prepare players for the professional level has been commendable.
Challenges:
  1. Inconsistent Offense: One of the main criticisms of the Iowa program over the last eight years has been their inconsistent offense. While they have had moments of success, there have been periods where the offense struggled to produce consistent results.
  2. Lack of Conference Championships: Although the Hawkeyes have been competitive within the Big Ten Conference, they have not won a conference championship during this period. They have fallen short in some crucial matchups against conference rivals.
  3. Limited Success in Big Bowl Games: While the Hawkeyes have regularly qualified for bowl games, their success in major bowl games has been limited. They have struggled against higher-ranked opponents in some of the more prestigious bowl games.
Comparison with Other Programs:
  1. Ohio State Buckeyes: The Buckeyes have been the dominant force within the Big Ten Conference, consistently winning conference championships and earning berths in the College Football Playoff. They have had greater success on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball compared to Iowa.
  2. Alabama Crimson Tide: Alabama has been the gold standard in college football, winning multiple national championships. Their sustained success, both in recruiting top talent and on-field performance, has set them apart from most programs, including Iowa.
  3. Wisconsin Badgers: Like Iowa, Wisconsin has been a consistent contender within the Big Ten. However, the Badgers have had a slight edge in terms of conference championships and overall success in big games, including bowl matchups.
In summary, the Iowa Hawkeyes have been a solid football program over the last eight years, consistently earning bowl game appearances and maintaining a strong defensive tradition. However, they have faced challenges with an inconsistent offense, a lack of conference championships, and limited success in major bowl games. When compared to top programs like Ohio State and Alabama, the Hawkeyes have fallen short in terms of overall success and national prominence. Nevertheless, they have remained competitive within the Big Ten Conference, similar to programs like Wisconsin.

Iowa has been amazingly consistent since 2016

2016. 8-5
2017. 8-5
2018. 9-4
2019. 10-3
2020. 6-2 (projected to 10-3)
2021. 10-4
2022. 8-5

Iowa has a high floor and a decent ceiling. It just doesn't ever reach that Ohio St / Bama elite level. That seems to be only thing missing, a big ten championship and playoff game. With the playoff expanding to 12 teams in 2024, that might happen every once and a while.

If Kirk could just figure out how to get the offense up to snuff with the level of the defense I could see Iowa being in the playoffs on a regular basis. The offense has been what is inconsistent. It’s been running on square wheels.

Hopefully the wheels picked up from Michigan will have round wheels finally. Fingers crossed.

Offensive plays behind the line will not get it.
I guess that’s one way to state a problem. I am hopeful for this season. We have a proven QB “FINALLY”. Our running backs are good and our tight ends are excellent. Defense is loaded.

So yes it will all come down to the offensive line and avoiding major injuries. To say the schedule is favorable is an understatement.

All stars are aligned for a special season. We all know Kirk’s history is his success on the lines. I don’t think he is just sitting back and leaving junior to the wolves this year. I anticipate he will be more involved in assisting in this weak spot.

Anything less than nine wins would be.disappointing. We have done 12-0 before it’s time for a repeat. If we can keep our QB from getting crushed and injured this could be a very special year.

How’s that for being positive!

I do not see one good reason for lacking confidence in this team.

The odds of winning a Big Conference Championship are dreadful

Ohio State and Michigan are the perennial champions

The recruiting advantage they have is enormous

Winning the West side of things and making the bowl games are fine

The Bowl win over USC was a landmark bowl win

They apparently thought they could waltz to a victory

Hawks kicked their slimy asses soundly

Still remember one of the Trojans stepping on the helmet of a Hawk
on the ground

Spanked their blue blood butts solidly

This is as good as it's ever been for Iowa football, I've never understood why people wish that away so much instead of enjoying runs like we've never seen before as Iowa fans. That said, I want a better offense as well, I just know that with wishing for 1 thing to get better often leads to other things taking a step back. That's how it works, that's how recruiting focuses go right? Shine the light here, something weird pops up in the dark. Iowa wants to win games with it's defense and wants a serviceable enough offense that doesn't give the game away. If you don't have the right QB for that, it's not going to work. I feel we will see an uptick on O this year, but imo, somewhere else won't quite me up to speed or not at the level we are accustomed to.
