Commit Capsules: Did Iowa Get a Steal in John Raymon?

Do you think he'll stay at DE? Looked like a blocking MACHINE when he was in at fullback! Maybe a OT?

Add 20-30 lbs and he will be a beast. I think he should stay at DE but maybe in short yardage situations use him as a fb. It was crazy how he pushed that guy back about 20 yards on that run early in the video.

why do we want him to gain 20-30? I remember Lamar Woodley, Terrell Suggs, O'brien Schofield, Brandon Graham and several other 250-260lb pash rushers being very effective. Not to beat the dead horse, but could the additional weight impact 4th quarter conditioning?

The claim about 4th quarter conditioning is a MYTH. The bigger issue there had to do with our problems at LB. To be more specific:

1. We had a TR FR at the MIKE LB. The MIKE LB lines the DL up and makes sure that the front 7 are set up right given what the O is doing. Thus, I think that it goes without saying that there were plenty of occasions when the DL wasn't optimally positioned.

2. When Nielsen went out we were then subsequently hurting at the LEO spot. The LEO is really responsible for setting the edge on that side of the field and forcing everything to where there is help. After Nielsen went out we were giving up much more rushing yardage to the outside (and that's saying nothing about how much Nielsen helped us in coverage too).

3. The LBs had trouble with their coverage responsibilities and opposing QBs were exploiting that fact to its fullest. And, mind you, this was understandable ... due to all of the injuries at LB, we were stuck without our most experienced and/or most talented guys in coverage. I think that Morris is capable of being as good in coverage as Angerer ... however, he was also just a TR FR (you cannot expect him to be perfect right from the outset).

The above factors, when combined, were a big reason why opposing teams had such success converting on 3rd downs. And, when your D is stuck playing a lot against up-tempo offenses ... it tires them out. That's just logic ... and it will happen to ANY D.

20-30 pounds of weight has zero impact on conditioning provided it's "good weight". In the history of Iowa football (1999) I don't think a single player has put on 20 pounds of "bad weight".

Fullback just isn't an impact position. Don't get me wrong, it's very very important to the success of the Iowa Football team, but it isn't one that we need to fill using this type of athletic talent.

We've had good success taking walkons with the right frame of mind and enought desire to sell out to play for Iowa, building them up through the S&C program, and turning them into very good fullbacks. With all due respect there are probably a half dozen guys that we could bring on to the team as walk on's this year capable of becomming our starting full back and doing a good job at it.

I see no reason to take someone with a lot of upside elsewhere and put him somewhere his impact would be limited.

This should be stickied at the top of the page as well...Hey Jon, if there are going to be lots of commit capsules, can they all be combined into one "SUPER commit capsule" thread? That way they're all just one click away, instead of taking up 20+ spots at the top of the forum?
