Commit #5 a K/P: Vid & What's that Mean?

The Iowa Hawkeyes have added a scholarship punter and kicker to the fold, receiving a verbal commitment from Connor Kornbrath, who hails from West Virginia.

It was newest Iowa recruiting Maurice Fleming, Jr who said on twitter late last night that "the new Hawkeye is a punter from WV."

Kornbrath is 6-7 and is also a solid basketball prospect, likely good enough to play at the mid-major level.

According to Scout.com in an an item written by Kevin Kinder, Kornbrath recently took part in the Kohl's National Showcase Eastern Camp. He won the punting and kicking contests there, which shot his national ranking up into the Top Ten by that organization and a five star ranking, with one of his kickoffs having 4.1 seconds of hang time. You can see a video below...

Iowa has Mike Meyer now on scholarship...that's for three more years. Iowa has Jonny Mullings on scholarship...that is for four more years.

Kornbrath is someone that could handle all of the kicking duties, but few players are capable of doing that and not letting one area suffer...then again, his size could help him in that area.

After watching Mullings this year before games, he has a long way to go with regards to getting punts off in a timely fashion...and he was inconsistent. Punters can come a long way while on campus, and we'll likely see how far if Eric Guthrie wins the job this year, someone even Ferentz is surprised to see be in the mix

This kid is gonna have a shot to come in and compete as a freshman, because if Guthrie wins the job next year, he is one and done as he will be a senior...Meyer will be a junior when Korbrath is a freshman, so Kornbrath's quickest way onto the field will be in the punting area.

It's a good move to add a player like this who is skilled in all of the kicking areas.

I've learned not to be surprised by the number of specialists Iowa will have on s'ship. Most teams wouldn't have tendered a s'ship to Schlicher when they had a Kaeding on board for two more years; that move paid off huge in '04. I could see this kid coming in from the beginning and handling KO, which may help Meyer in that he just has to concentrate on FG and XP.

Will Iowa give Mossbrucker 5 years, or will they show him the door after 4? I would think this move is a sign that Trent gets his 4 years and adios.

Hopefully Mullings improves his delivery and timing. What I saw last year he's very sl-o-o-o-o-w-w-w-w.

In football there is the "hitch & go." From Down Under comes the, "hitch & slow." There must be a no running at the kicker rule in Rugby.

Will be interesting to see how Mullings pans out. I remember watching his videos (of course, edited to show his unique abilities) but it makes you wonder if coaches are not quite convinced he will be the punter of the future. The kicking game can win and lose you at least a couple of games a year. Nothing like having a quality punter who can boom the ball and help pin the opposing team deep. And, nothing like having a dead-eye field goal kicker. Competition is good. Sounds like this kid may be a nice punter for us. Think of how much we enjoyed Donahue the past four/five years.

What does Jamie Kohl know? He was a Cyclone!
Anyways, the staff must not be too confident in the kicking positions right now, and I don't blame them, the players at those positions haven't earned any job security yet. Itll be interesting to see hour MM does this year, he is my brothers, cousin in law.

I think that we're okay at PK right now ... however, the punting spot is currently the big unknown.

More competition never hurts anything. Hopefully we get our kicking questions answered, but I have no problem bringing in another solid leg on scholarship.

Cant count out Marshall Koehn from Solon, I know he isnt on scholoarship but he could figure into the mix as well.
