Commings

I know things did not work out with Commings at Iowa. He looked like a good hire at the time. He was a great HS coach with ties to a recruiting hotbed, and I believe he came within one game of being undefeated for two years in a row. In my opinion his biggest problem at Iowa was players leaving.

what is your opinion based on? were you even born when he coached at iowa?

he's not the only high school coach 'phenom' to fail at the college level.

Unfortunately, Commings was not nearly ready enough to be a Big 10 coach. He was in so far over his head ...it was not pretty. THAT hire was as bad or worse than Lickliter, so Iowa was scraping the bottom of the barrel with both hires. Commings simply had no clue.

Bob Commings in the mid-70'S? more like 1 game away from being winless... lol.

nah, you're thinking of Frank Lauterbur. His 3 years at Iowa (4-28-1) mirrored his last 3 years at Toledo (28-4-1). But he was winless in his last year at Iowa. :D

It is always great to relive the good ole days.

WTF.....huh? What are we talking about here? I think I better let this thread play out before I comment.

He will forever hold a special place in my heart for beating ISU in the series resumption in I think 1978........ I sat in the knothole section. Great game........
