Combine Capsule: Jack Campbell

The only real knock against Campbell is that in today's NFL, the Jack Lambert, Matt Millen, Chris Spielman run stuffing MLB simply isn't in vogue anymore. It's part of the reason Chicago's Jack Sanborn wasn't even drafted.

Hopefully the combine proves that he could play Will or Leo as well, and cover back and tight ends out of the backfield. Showing ability to be a three down Linebacker at the next level should enhance his stock.

My only counter to what you are saying is that he is 6'5 with long arms. You can drop him in zones and have him cover areas instead of specific guys...he does move well enough in space.

I am a Steeler fan and Devin Bush is looking like a bust, a guy who they are not going to pay. If they want to use a 4th or a 5th round pick on a inside linebacker like Campbell who will come down hill in the run game and in zone, cover the middle of the field on pass downs...my Steelers could easily get 4 years of production out of him at a "cheap" price.

It’s working out ok for Josey Jewell who isn’t as athletic or as fast.

The combine is about numbers, and how (for some reason) scouts still drool over the data.

I know, tell us something we don't know.

It comes down to, really, the right position, the right coaching staff, the right organization, the right fit.

Just ask Long or Gallery about how it really works after the glitz of the draft is over.

Do they really though?

Seems to me they know what attributes are important and the underwear olympics is mainly for show and Mel Kiper to ramble on about.

I think it's a self-sustaining business....much like the bowl games. Various fringe entities have their fingers in the pie. It's a 32-team, 4-day interview.

My research indicates the following interesting facts:
- Tex Schramm advocated for a centralized evaluation process. It's now permanently held @ Lucas Oil.
- Training centers abound to prepare athletes. Upwards to the tune of $25-$30K for 60 days of instruction.
- Combine athletes are there by invitation only. Invites go to 330-ish players. Under classmen have until mid January to declare their draft status. Not invited?....not going.
- ESPN provides daily coverage.
- Players can pick and choose which activities they want to participate in.
- The Wonderlick test was removed in 2022.
- Players can be denied participation with a felony conviction for example, or, a misdemeanor involving a firearm, violence, etc.
- Some sentiment exists the NFL uses this to de-value ($$) players come draft time.
- Adidas offers a millon dollar bonus for anyone breaking the current 40-yard dash record.
- Combining Combine costs with other costs, it can cost a player $100K to get ready for the draft.

Big business. Big salaries on the line. Too big for the NFL to entertain the notion of ever getting rid of it.
